Reconciling APOD BH Videos w/ Physics Forums Discussion

In summary, APOD recently posted two scientifically accurate computer-generated videos titled "Orbiting a Black Hole" and "Circling a Black Hole at its Photon Sphere". However, on PF, amateur protests about the perception of individuals free-falling past the event horizon of a black hole have been rejected by professionals. While the APOD videos show light from far away and do not address crossing the event horizon, they may differ from the explanations of how an individual perceives the experience due to the videos being from the perspective of an observer in orbit, while the individual is free-falling.

Recently, APOD (Astronomy Picture Of the Day) posted two computer generated videos. They are Orbiting a Black Hole and Circling a Black Hole at its Photon Sphere. APOD says that the videos are scientifically accurate.

But here on PF (Physics Forums) many attempts by myself and other amateurs to protest the assertion that Bob (or Alice) perceive nothing as they free fall past the EH into the interior of a sufficiently large black hole. These amateur protests have been repeatedly rebuffed by the pros. The pros say, it is true that Bob would perceive nothing special.

How do I reconcile the APOD videos with those explanations of Bob's perception?

Is it the fact that Bob is free-falling whereas the videos are from the point of view of an observer in orbit?

Those images deal with light from very far away, not purely local effects. Also, they don't deal with crossing the EH.

Related to Reconciling APOD BH Videos w/ Physics Forums Discussion

1. How do the APOD black hole videos reconcile with the discussions on Physics Forums?

The APOD black hole videos are based on real data and observations from telescopes, while the discussions on Physics Forums often involve theoretical and mathematical models. Therefore, the videos and discussions are not in conflict but rather complement each other.

2. Do the APOD black hole videos accurately depict the physics of black holes?

Yes, the APOD black hole videos are created by a team of astrophysicists and are based on the latest scientific understanding of black holes. However, it is important to note that they may not necessarily be 100% accurate as our understanding of black holes is still evolving.

3. How do the APOD black hole videos demonstrate the effects of gravitational lensing?

The APOD black hole videos often show the distortion of light and objects around the black hole, which is caused by the strong gravitational pull of the black hole. This is an example of gravitational lensing, which is a phenomenon predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity.

4. Can we trust the APOD black hole videos as reliable sources of scientific information?

Yes, the APOD black hole videos are produced by NASA and are based on rigorous scientific research and data. They undergo thorough peer-review processes before being published, making them trustworthy sources of scientific information.

5. How do the APOD black hole videos contribute to our understanding of black holes?

The APOD black hole videos provide visual representations of black holes, which can help the general public better understand the complex concepts and processes involved. They also showcase the latest discoveries and advancements in the field of black hole research, furthering our understanding of these mysterious objects in space.
