Projectile Motion Bomb Question

In summary, The question presents a scenario of a power hungry megalomaniac obtaining mortar bomb capability that can fire 120.5kg shells a maximum distance of 5321m when projected at 45° to the horizontal. The maximum height reached by the shell can be calculated using the equations S=Ut + 1/2at^2, v^2=u^2 +2as, and v=u+at, where s is the distance, u is the initial velocity, a is the acceleration, and t is the time. Using these equations, the time it takes for the shell to reach its maximum height is 16.4 seconds, the initial velocity of the shell is 229m/s, and the

Homework Statement

(b) A power hungry megalomaniac obtains mortar bomb capability. The device could fire 120.5kg mortar shells a maximum distance of 5321m when projected at 45° to the horizontal. What would the velocity of the shell be as it left the muzzle of the device?

(c) What was the maximum height reached by the shell?

Homework Equations

S=Ut + 1/2at^2
v^2=u^2 +2as
v=u+at

where s=distance, u=initial velocity, a= acceleration and t=time

The Attempt at a Solution

t=16.4s
u=229m/s
maximum height=1338m

Can anyone help me check if the solution is right. Thks

just use the range formula , i.e R = u2 sin 2[tex]\theta[/tex] / g

and max ht = u2 sin 2 [tex]\theta[/tex] / 2g

Related to Projectile Motion Bomb Question

1. What is projectile motion?

Projectile motion refers to the motion of an object that is launched into the air and moves along a curved path under the influence of gravity.

2. What factors affect the trajectory of a projectile?

The trajectory of a projectile is affected by the initial velocity, angle of launch, and the force of gravity. Other factors such as air resistance and wind can also have an impact.

3. How does a bomb use projectile motion?

A bomb uses projectile motion when it is launched from a height and moves along a curved path under the influence of gravity before hitting its target on the ground.

4. What is the ideal angle for maximum range in projectile motion?

The ideal angle for maximum range in projectile motion is 45 degrees. This is because at this angle, the projectile will travel the furthest distance before hitting the ground.

5. How can the range of a projectile be increased?

The range of a projectile can be increased by increasing the initial velocity or by increasing the angle of launch. Other factors such as reducing air resistance or using a more aerodynamic shape can also help increase the range.
