Mechatronics vs Materials science, which course first?

In summary, the conversation discusses the choice between taking a Mechatronics course or a Materials Science course with 6ECTS in the field of biomedical engineering. The individual is interested in electronics instrumentation/biochemistry and has a preference for mechatronics/robotics over biomechanics. They also mention the possibility of getting a letter of recommendation from the teacher in mechatronics for graduate studies. The other person recommends the Materials Science course as it may be more generally useful in future work, but ultimately it depends on the individual's specialization goals.

I have the choice of 6ECTS, and I will use it on either a Mechatronics course or a Materials Science course.

My field is biomedical engineering, which course would you recommend, does either of the courses pre-requisites the other?

What do you want to do in Biomedical Engineering? I really enjoyed my Material Science class in Undergrad -- I would think it would prove more generally useful in your future work than Mechatronics, but it depends on what you want to specialize in going forward, IMO.

-I am focused on electronics instrumentation/biochemistry. I am also taking some biochem courses and I am interested in doing research in mol biology and on the micro level.

-I already know the teacher in mechatronics so I feel I might get a letter of recommendation from there(graduate studies).

-I am not interested at all in biomechanics and they bore me

-mechatronics/robotics do interest me though and I have been doing some hobby projects.

1. What is the main difference between Mechatronics and Materials Science?

Mechatronics is an interdisciplinary field that combines mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science to design and create intelligent systems. Materials science, on the other hand, focuses on the study of the properties and applications of different materials.

2. Which course is more practical and hands-on?

Both Mechatronics and Materials Science courses involve hands-on projects and experiments. However, Mechatronics tends to be more practical as it involves building and testing physical systems, while Materials Science may involve more theoretical and laboratory work.

3. Can I study Mechatronics without a background in engineering or computer science?

It is possible to study Mechatronics without a background in engineering or computer science, but it may require more effort and dedication. Some universities offer introductory courses to cover the basics before delving into the more advanced topics.

4. Which course should I take first?

It ultimately depends on your interests and career goals. If you are more interested in designing and creating intelligent systems, Mechatronics would be a good starting point. If you are interested in the properties and applications of materials, then you may want to start with Materials Science.

5. Are there any career opportunities that combine both Mechatronics and Materials Science?

Yes, there are several career opportunities that require knowledge and skills in both Mechatronics and Materials Science. Some examples include robotics engineer, materials research scientist, and product development engineer.
