There is not really any distinction between Matlab and the CAS systems as Matlab has a CAS (MuPad) embedded in it for symbolic manipulation (or it does if you have the student edition or have forked out the extra £500-1000 for the symbolic toolbox)How does Matlab or computer algebra systems find derivatives of functions?

Is it correct that they use matrix transformation?

2. They find derivatives by essentially applying the same sort of rules you will have learned in your calculus courses. If you want more information Google for "symbolic differentiation", you will find hits like >>this<<
