Mastering Self-Studying: Tips for Understanding Algebra Without Lectures

In summary, the speaker has been studying physics for a year and has not had difficulties with math subjects. However, they are currently struggling with algebra and believe it is because they lack lectures on the theory. They are seeking advice on a helpful method for understanding a book, and suggest videos as a potential solution.

Hello,
I've been studying physics in college for 1 year now and so far I haven't had much difficulties on math subjects (such as calculus and linear algebra). This semester I decided to study some of algebra and I've been having some difficulties reading the book and understanding all by my self. It takes me way too much time compared to other subjects (such as calculus). I related that problem with the fact that I have no lectures at all on the theory, so it's harder just reading and geting it. I'd like to know if there is a helping metod for undertanding of a book.

Thank you

Which book are you reading? That would help pinpoint your difficulties.

I find videos can help a lot, especially the short ones that cover just what you want to know. For example, suppose you are learning about cosets in algebra, watching videos is probably a lot better than reading about them.

for reaching out and sharing your experience with self-studying algebra. It can definitely be challenging to learn a subject without lectures or guidance from a teacher. Here are a few tips that may help you better understand algebra on your own:

1. Start with the basics: Algebra builds upon fundamental concepts such as arithmetic, equations, and functions. Make sure you have a strong foundation in these areas before moving on to more complex topics.

2. Use online resources: There are many online resources available that can provide additional explanations and examples for algebra concepts. Khan Academy, MathisFun, and Purplemath are some popular options.

3. Work through practice problems: Practice is key when it comes to mastering algebra. Make sure to work through plenty of practice problems to solidify your understanding of the concepts.

4. Create a study schedule: Set aside dedicated time each day to study algebra. This will help you stay on track and make consistent progress.

5. Seek help when needed: Don't hesitate to reach out to your classmates, professors, or online forums for help when you encounter difficulties. It's important to address any confusion early on before it snowballs into bigger problems.

Remember, self-studying requires discipline and patience, but with the right approach, you can successfully understand algebra without lectures. Good luck with your studies!
