Making Liquid CO2: Is It Possible?

In summary, liquid CO2 can be made at room temperature by increasing the pressure above 5.1 atmospheres. To make it, a high-pressure vessel, regulator, and cooling system are needed. It is generally safe to handle, but precautions should be taken. Liquid CO2 has various uses in different industries and is stored and transported in specially designed tanks at low temperatures.

It needs to be under hihger pressure. Look for a P-T phase diagram for CO2. e.g. http://www.teamonslaught.fsnet.co.uk/co2 phase diagram.GIF

Above a pressure of 5.11 atm, CO2 will have melting & boiling phase transitions as T is increased.

Related to Making Liquid CO2: Is It Possible?

1. Can liquid CO2 be made at room temperature?

Yes, liquid CO2 can be made at room temperature by increasing the pressure to above 5.1 atmospheres, which is known as the critical point of CO2.

2. What equipment is needed to make liquid CO2?

To make liquid CO2, you will need a high-pressure vessel, a regulator, and a cooling system. The vessel should be able to withstand pressures above 5.1 atmospheres, and the cooling system should be able to reach temperatures below -56.6 degrees Celsius.

3. Is it safe to handle liquid CO2?

Liquid CO2 is generally safe to handle, but caution should be taken as it can cause frostbite if it comes into contact with skin. It is also important to have proper ventilation when working with liquid CO2 as it can displace oxygen in a confined space.

4. What are the common uses of liquid CO2?

Liquid CO2 has many industrial and commercial uses, such as in refrigeration, carbonation of beverages, and as a solvent in the extraction of essential oils. It is also used in fire extinguishers and as a propellant in aerosol products.

5. How is liquid CO2 stored and transported?

Liquid CO2 is stored and transported in specially designed tanks that can withstand high pressures. It is typically kept at a temperature below -56.6 degrees Celsius to maintain its liquid state. It is also important to keep the tanks well-ventilated to prevent the buildup of pressure.
