Life: Comparing Chloroplasts in Onions and Other Plant Cells

In summary, mesophyll cells have more chloroplasts than root cells in a plant. It is unclear if onions have chloroplasts, but if they have stems above ground, then they may have chloroplasts in that part. Root cells have a higher density of mitochondria compared to mesophyll cells.

Not sure about onions either. If it is underground, there would be no chlor, but if it has stems rising above ground, then yes. Picture a green onion for example. Then green part is the steam, which is above ground, which has chlor. The onion part is under the ground with the roots.

Related to Life: Comparing Chloroplasts in Onions and Other Plant Cells

1. What is the difference between root and mesophyll cells?

Root cells are found in the roots of a plant and are responsible for absorbing water and nutrients from the soil. Mesophyll cells, on the other hand, are found in the leaves and are responsible for photosynthesis.

2. How do root and mesophyll cells function differently?

Root cells have specialized structures, such as root hairs, that increase their surface area and allow for more efficient absorption of water and nutrients. Mesophyll cells have chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll and allow for the process of photosynthesis to occur.

3. Can root cells perform photosynthesis like mesophyll cells?

No, root cells do not have chloroplasts and therefore cannot perform photosynthesis. Their main function is to absorb water and nutrients from the soil.

4. Do root and mesophyll cells have different structures?

Yes, while both types of cells have a cell wall, cell membrane, and cytoplasm, they have different structures that are specialized for their specific functions. For example, root cells have root hairs while mesophyll cells have chloroplasts.

5. How do root and mesophyll cells work together in a plant?

Root cells absorb water and nutrients from the soil and transport them to the rest of the plant through the xylem. Mesophyll cells then use these resources to perform photosynthesis and produce glucose, which is then transported to other parts of the plant through the phloem. This allows for the plant to grow and produce food for itself.
