Laser facets reflectivity calculation from measured optical power

In summary, calculating the reflectivity of laser facets is important for understanding the behavior and improving the performance of a laser. The optical power of a laser can be measured using a power meter or by analyzing interference fringes. The reflectivity of laser facets can be affected by various factors and can be calculated using methods such as the Fresnel equations and laser diode reflectometry. Changes in reflectivity can greatly impact the efficiency and power output of a laser.

Hi Every one,

I measured optical output power from both laser facets, front facets emits 120 mW and back facets 10 mW. Assuming front facets reflectivity of 30%(for cleaved facets). What will be the reflective of back facets? Please suggest formula and reference this problem.

Related to Laser facets reflectivity calculation from measured optical power

1. What is the purpose of calculating laser facet reflectivity from measured optical power?

The reflectivity of laser facets is an important factor in determining the performance and efficiency of a laser. By calculating the reflectivity, scientists can better understand the behavior of the laser and make adjustments to improve its performance.

2. How is the optical power of a laser measured?

The optical power of a laser can be measured using a power meter or by analyzing the interference fringes produced by the laser. The latter method is often used for more precise measurements.

3. What factors affect the reflectivity of laser facets?

The reflectivity of laser facets can be affected by a variety of factors including the material and structure of the facets, the wavelength of the laser, and the angle of incidence of the laser beam.

4. What methods can be used to calculate laser facet reflectivity?

There are several methods for calculating laser facet reflectivity. These include using the Fresnel equations, the transfer matrix method, and experimental measurements using laser diode reflectometry.

5. How can changes in laser facet reflectivity impact the performance of a laser?

Changes in laser facet reflectivity can have a significant impact on the performance of a laser. Higher reflectivity can lead to increased lasing efficiency and power output, while lower reflectivity can result in decreased efficiency and potential damage to the laser.
