    E&m Points
In summary, the conversation discusses the concept of anomalous absorption in E&M and how it is explained by the real and imaginary parts of permittivity. The participants also question why the term "electric displacement" is used and suggest looking up the answers instead of just memorizing them.

dear all

i need the help in understanding the following points:

1- In E&M, what is happening (physically) at anomalous absorption?, and how is this explained by the form of permittivity (real and imaginary parts)?
2- why did the "electric displacement" call that way?

Welcome to PF;
To understand something, instead of just memorizing the "correct" answer, you have to think your way through it - we cannot just tell you.
So:

1. what would absorption normally be when it is not anomalous? what do the real and imaginary parts of permittivity signify?
2. when the electric displacement field is useful, what is being displaced?
(Basically the name is an accident of history that we seem to be stuck with.)

If you do not know the answers, try looking them up.

Related to I need to understand the following E&M points

What is E&M?

E&M stands for electricity and magnetism. It is a branch of physics that deals with the study of electric and magnetic fields, their interactions, and their effects on matter.

Why is it important to understand E&M?

E&M is crucial for understanding the fundamental laws of nature and for explaining many phenomena in our everyday lives, such as electricity, magnetism, and light. It also forms the basis for many modern technologies, including computers, televisions, and cell phones.

What are some key concepts in E&M?

Some key concepts in E&M include electric charge, electric fields, magnetic fields, electromagnetic waves, and the laws of electromagnetism (e.g. Coulomb's law, Gauss's law, and Faraday's law).

How is E&M related to other branches of physics?

E&M is closely related to other branches of physics, such as mechanics, thermodynamics, and optics. In fact, many phenomena in these branches can be explained using E&M principles.

What are some real-world applications of E&M?

E&M has numerous real-world applications, including generating and transmitting electricity, powering electronic devices, medical imaging (e.g. MRI), and communication technologies (e.g. radios, satellites).
