Have your parents donate a major science building, or a new med school wing, to the college you wish to attend.

get real. focus on learning, as opposed to absorbing prestige from your university.

Have a personality. Give that impression to the interviewer, get into and rank real good (if you don't, you don't have much chance) competitions (math, physics, chemistry, etc.). Get into extra curricular activities that require creativity and engagement from your part and most importantly, those activities have to be things that you like. Get good grades, good SAT scores, and get your teachers to write you excellent recommendation letters.

I want to go to Caltech, but I don't know what I want to do yet. Definitely something math or science related (physics and calculus are my favorite subjects)

1. How important are extracurricular activities for college admissions?

Extracurricular activities can play a significant role in college admissions. Admissions officers look for well-rounded students who are involved in activities outside of academics. These activities can demonstrate your interests, skills, and commitment to your community. However, it is important to note that quality is more important than quantity. It is better to be deeply involved in a few extracurriculars rather than have a long list of superficial involvements.

2. Is it better to take more challenging courses or get better grades?

Both are important. Admissions officers want to see that you have challenged yourself academically and have taken rigorous courses. However, maintaining good grades is also crucial. If you are struggling in a challenging course, it may be better to drop down to a slightly easier level to ensure you can maintain good grades. It is all about finding a balance between challenging yourself and maintaining your academic performance.

3. Does applying for early decision increase my chances of getting into my top choice college?

Applying for early decision can increase your chances of getting into a college, but it is not a guarantee. Early decision is a binding agreement, meaning that if you are accepted, you are required to attend that college. Admissions officers may be more likely to accept students who apply for early decision because it demonstrates a strong interest in the school. However, it is important to only apply for early decision if you are confident that the school is your top choice.

4. How much do standardized test scores matter in the college admissions process?

Standardized test scores, such as the SAT or ACT, are just one aspect of the college admissions process. They can be used to compare students from different schools and backgrounds, but they are not the only factor that admissions officers consider. Your grades, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation also play a significant role in the admissions process. It is important to prepare for and take these tests seriously, but they are not the only determining factor for college admissions.

5. Can I improve my chances of getting into a top college by hiring a private admissions counselor?

Hiring a private admissions counselor may be helpful in some cases, but it is not necessary. Admissions officers are looking for authentic and genuine applicants, and a private counselor cannot change your academic record or extracurricular involvements. It is important to do your own research and put in the effort to make your application stand out. However, if you feel that you need additional support and guidance, a private admissions counselor may be a valuable resource.
