How Fast Was the Truck Moving Before the Collision?

In summary, car collisions can be caused by various factors such as distracted driving, speeding, and mechanical failures. To prevent these collisions, drivers can follow traffic laws, avoid distractions, and regularly maintain their vehicles. The most common types of car collisions include rear-end, side-impact, and head-on collisions. In the event of a collision, it is important to check for injuries, move to a safe location, and document the scene. Technology, such as advanced driver assistance systems, can also assist in preventing collisions, but drivers should still practice safe driving habits.

Homework Statement

Two vehicles stick together as a result of the collison. If the 900 kg car was initially at 12 m/s east, then with what speed was the 2200 kg truck traveling north if they move off together in a direction equally north and east.

Homework Equations

MV = P
Pi = Pf
(M1)vi + (M2)vi = Mvf

The Attempt at a Solution

I worked out the equation, but I got lost after that.
(900)(12) + (2220)(vi) = (900+2200)(vf)
10800 + 2220vi = 3100vf

How would I find vi from that equation?

nooo :redface:

https://www.physicsforums.com/library.php?do=view_item&itemid=53" is a vector, and the conservation of momentum is a vector equation …

you need to take components in a particular direction :wink:

try again! :smile:

Related to How Fast Was the Truck Moving Before the Collision?

1. What causes car collisions?

Car collisions can be caused by various factors, such as distracted driving, speeding, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, poor weather conditions, and mechanical failures. Other common causes include reckless driving, disobeying traffic laws, and driver fatigue.

2. How can car collisions be prevented?

There are several ways to prevent car collisions, including following traffic laws and speed limits, avoiding distractions while driving, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, and regularly maintaining your car to ensure it is in good working condition. Additionally, defensive driving techniques and staying alert while on the road can also help prevent collisions.

3. What are the most common types of car collisions?

The most common types of car collisions include rear-end collisions, side-impact collisions, and head-on collisions. Other types include rollover collisions, single-vehicle collisions, and multi-vehicle collisions.

4. What should I do if I am involved in a car collision?

If you are involved in a car collision, the first step is to check for injuries and call for medical assistance if needed. Then, move your vehicle to a safe location if possible and exchange information with the other driver(s) involved. It is also important to document the scene by taking photos and contacting the police to file a report.

5. Can technology help prevent car collisions?

Yes, technology such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and collision avoidance systems can help prevent car collisions by alerting drivers of potential hazards and assisting with braking or steering. However, it is still important for drivers to stay attentive and follow safe driving practices to prevent collisions.
