How far the aircraft slides before it comes to rest ?

In summary, the aircraft slide distance is the distance the aircraft travels after landing or losing control before coming to a complete stop. This distance is affected by factors such as the speed, landing surface, weight and size of the aircraft, and external forces. It can be calculated using the aircraft's velocity, coefficient of friction, and deceleration rate, or measured directly with specialized equipment. The pilot can control the slide distance through various methods and it can impact safety in emergency situations. It is crucial for pilots to be aware of these factors and take necessary measures to control the slide distance.

Homework Statement

An aircraft has to make an emergancey landing on a runway
without landing gear , if the aircraft lands at 40 m\s-1
and μ is 0.5 ,
How far the aircraft slides before it comes to rest ?

Homework Equations

X=2 μ g \ v2

The Attempt at a Solution

2 x 0.5 \ 20 = 2 m ?
Using some website calculater result was : 1600 m
I'm terribly lost

I would approach this problem by first understanding the situation and the given information. The problem states that an aircraft has to make an emergency landing on a runway without landing gear, and we are given the initial velocity (40 m/s) and the coefficient of friction (μ=0.5).

To calculate the distance the aircraft slides before coming to rest, we can use the equation X=2μg/v², where X is the distance, μ is the coefficient of friction, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and v is the initial velocity.

Plugging in the given values, we get X=2(0.5)(9.8 m/s²)/(40 m/s)², which simplifies to X=0.245 m. This means that the aircraft will slide approximately 0.245 meters before coming to rest.

However, this calculation assumes that the aircraft slides in a straight line, which may not be the case in a real-life scenario. Other factors such as wind, surface conditions, and the pilot's actions can also affect the distance the aircraft slides before coming to rest. Therefore, this calculation should be taken as an estimate and not an exact value.

In conclusion, the distance the aircraft slides before coming to rest can be estimated using the given information and the equation X=2μg/v². However, in a real-life scenario, other factors may also play a role in determining the exact distance.

Related to How far the aircraft slides before it comes to rest ?

1. What is the definition of aircraft slide distance?

The aircraft slide distance is the distance the aircraft travels after landing or losing control before it comes to a complete stop.

2. What factors affect the aircraft slide distance?

The aircraft slide distance is affected by factors such as the speed of the aircraft, the type of landing surface, the weight and size of the aircraft, and any external forces such as wind or braking.

3. How is the aircraft slide distance calculated?

The aircraft slide distance is calculated by using the aircraft's velocity, the coefficient of friction of the landing surface, and the aircraft's deceleration rate. It can also be measured directly using specialized equipment.

4. Can the aircraft slide distance be controlled by the pilot?

Yes, the aircraft slide distance can be controlled by the pilot through various methods such as applying brakes, using reverse thrust, or adjusting the angle of descent during landing.

5. How does the aircraft slide distance impact safety?

The aircraft slide distance can impact safety in the case of emergency landings or loss of control situations. A longer slide distance may increase the chances of damage to the aircraft and potential injuries to passengers and crew. Therefore, it is important for pilots to be aware of the factors that affect slide distance and take appropriate measures to control it.
