Homework help (Force of friction)

In summary: I'm not sure but thank you for helping! In summary, the homework task involves finding the force of friction needed to make a body with a force of 10N move. However, the wording and context of the question are unclear and may contain technical mistakes. Further clarification is needed in order to accurately solve the problem.

Homework Statement

We have a body with force ##F=10N##. Now we know Force of friction makes the body not move if the Force of friction ##F_f## is higher than the normal force ##F_n##, so what force of friction do we have to depress to make the body move

2. The attempt at a solution
We know that the force of friction ##F_f## has to be lower or equal to normal force ##F_n##, so the solution would be:

##F_f ≤ 10N##

Am I right? Thanks!

Where is this body? is it being pinned to a vertical wall with a horizontal force or are you trying to push it across a surface?

That's what the task says

In general the normal force is perpendicular to the surface, and the force of friction is parallel to the surface, so this question appears to make no sense!

What is the context of this question?

Where did you find it?

Who gave it to you?

Where did that person find it?

It's my teacher's homework ..., she found it from the book, and the task says:

The body has force ##F=10N##. What force of friction ##F_f## do we have to depress to make the body move. Remind:
The force of friction ##F_f## has to be lower or equal to normal force ##F_n##, so the body can move.

This is the exact text that is written on the book.

Well that might be what is written, but it still makes no sense at all.

Breaking down what you have written:

"The body has force ##F=10N##" .
Now if the body had a weight of 10N it would have more meaning.

"What force of friction do we have to depress ... "
If that had read "What force of friction do we have to oppose ... " we would be part way to a logical situation.

"The force of friction ##F_f## has to be lower or equal to normal force ##F_n##, so the body can move".

Not quite sure what that might mean?

That's what is written on book, maybe they're technical mistakes?

Related to Homework help (Force of friction)

1. What is the definition of force of friction?

The force of friction is the resistance that occurs when two surfaces come into contact and slide against each other. It is caused by the microscopic irregularities on the surfaces and the interlocking of the surfaces.

2. How is the force of friction calculated?

The force of friction can be calculated by multiplying the coefficient of friction (μ) by the normal force (FN). The formula is Ff = μFN.

3. What factors affect the force of friction?

The force of friction is affected by the type of surfaces in contact, the force pressing the surfaces together (normal force), and the roughness and smoothness of the surfaces. The force of friction also depends on the speed of the objects and the presence of any lubricants.

4. How does the force of friction impact motion?

The force of friction acts in the opposite direction of motion, so it can slow down or stop an object's movement. It also causes heat to be generated, which can affect the speed and efficiency of motion.

5. How can the force of friction be reduced?

The force of friction can be reduced by using lubricants, such as oil or grease, to create a smoother surface between the two objects. The force of friction can also be reduced by using smoother surfaces or by reducing the normal force between the objects.
