Forces Exerted on Objects in Contact

In summary, the force exerted by the middle box on the upper box is 63.7 N, and the force exerted by the middle box on the lower box is 73.5 N. This is due to the equal and opposite reaction of the weight of each box.

Homework Statement

Three boxes are stacked, one on top of the other. The mass of the top box is 4kg. The mass of the middle box is 3.5kg. The mass of the bottom box is 3.0kg. What is the force exerted by the middle box on each of the other boxes?

Homework Equations

Fg = mg

The Attempt at a Solution

Force exerted by the middle box on the upper box:

FN (normal force) = force of middle box on upper box

FN = mg = (3.5 kg + 3.0 kg) * 9.8 N/kg

FN = 63.7 N

Therefore the force of the middle box on the upper box is 63.7 N.

Force exerted by the middle box on the lower box:

Force of middle box on lower box = mg = (4.0 kg + 3.5 kg) * 9.8

Force of middle box on lower box = 73.5N

Therefore the force of the middle box on the lower box is 73.5 N.Is this correct?

Normal force act up wards so the middle box will be acting on the top box and the bottom box will acting up on the middle box. So the middle box acts upwards on the top box with the same force as the weight of the top box.

Just remember that for any force there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Related to Forces Exerted on Objects in Contact

1. What is a force?

A force is a push or pull that can change the motion of an object. It is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude and direction.

2. What is contact force?

Contact force is a force that results from two objects physically touching each other. Examples include friction, normal force, and tension.

3. How do you calculate the net force on an object?

The net force on an object is the sum of all the forces acting on it. This can be calculated by adding the individual forces together, taking into account their direction and magnitude.

4. What is the difference between weight and mass?

Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object, while weight is a measure of the force exerted on an object by gravity. Mass is measured in kilograms, while weight is measured in Newtons.

5. How does surface area affect the force of friction?

The larger the surface area of contact between two objects, the greater the force of friction. This is because there is more surface for the objects to interact and create resistance against motion.
