Find Diameter of Tungsten Filament of Resistance 0.041

In summary, to find the diameter of a tungsten filament with a 2.5 cm length and a resistance of 0.041, using the equation R = p(L/pi*r^2) and substituting the given values, the diameter is calculated to be 0.20856 mm, which may be incorrect if the decimal point was placed incorrectly before square-rooting.

Homework Statement

A 2.5 cm length of tungsten filament in a
small lightbulb has a resistance of 0.041
.
Find its diameter. (The resistivity is
5.6 × 10−8
· m).
Answer in units of mm.

Homework Equations

R=p(L/pi*r^2)

The Attempt at a Solution

i have reworked the equation to the square root of pL/R*pi equals r and then multiplied that answer by 2 which nds u being 2.0856e-4 but it is not right??

Welcome to PF!

Hi bob12345! Welcome to PF!

(have a pi: π and a rho: ρ and try using the X2 tag just above the Reply box )

Method seems ok

have you just got the decimal point in the wrong place before square-rooting?

i didnt think so because i converted the length to meters..

Related to Find Diameter of Tungsten Filament of Resistance 0.041

1. What is the formula for finding the diameter of a tungsten filament with a resistance of 0.041?

The formula for finding the diameter of a tungsten filament with a resistance of 0.041 is: d = √(4ρL/πr2R) where d is the diameter, ρ is the resistivity of tungsten, L is the length of the filament, r is the radius, and R is the resistance.

2. How do I determine the resistivity of tungsten for this calculation?

The resistivity of tungsten can be found in a materials properties database or by conducting an experiment to measure the resistance and length of a tungsten wire. It is typically around 5.6 x 10-8 Ωm for pure tungsten.

3. Can this formula be used for filaments with different resistances?

Yes, this formula can be used for filaments with different resistances as long as you have all the necessary variables (resistivity, length, and resistance) to plug into the formula.

4. Is there a more accurate way to calculate the diameter of a tungsten filament?

Yes, there are other more accurate methods for calculating the diameter of a tungsten filament, such as using a micrometer or measuring the resistance at different lengths of the filament. However, the formula given is a good estimate for most cases.

5. What are some common applications for tungsten filaments?

Tungsten filaments are commonly used in incandescent light bulbs, vacuum tubes, and electron microscopes. They are also used in heating elements, thermocouples, and welding electrodes due to their high melting point and resistance to corrosion.
