In summary, the endoplasmic reticulum has two parts - rough and smooth. The rough part is responsible for synthesizing proteins with attached ribosomes, while the smooth part is responsible for synthesizing lipids.

Homework Statement

I have been asked to explain what Endoplasmic Reticulum Smooth and Rough is and what the functions are of it.

Homework Equations

N/A

The Attempt at a Solution

There are two recognized parts of the ER - Rough and Smooth - with the rough part of the ER synthesizing proteins with ribosomes attached to it with the smooth ER having the function for synthesizing of lipids.

----------

Is this even right? I basically need to just explain what it is breifly and what the functions are of it.

Thanks.

Rough endoplasmic reticulum is where proteins are synthesised (rough because it has ribosomes).

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum is where lipids are synthesised.

Related to Endoplasmic Reticulum (Rough and Smooth)?

1. What is the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)?

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an organelle found in eukaryotic cells that is responsible for many important cellular processes, including protein synthesis, lipid metabolism, and detoxification. It is a network of interconnected membranes that extends from the nuclear envelope to the cell membrane.

2. What is the difference between rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum?

The rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) is covered with ribosomes, giving it a bumpy appearance. It is involved in protein synthesis and modification. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) lacks ribosomes and is involved in lipid metabolism, detoxification, and calcium storage.

3. How does the endoplasmic reticulum contribute to protein synthesis?

The rough endoplasmic reticulum plays a key role in protein synthesis. Ribosomes on the surface of the RER synthesize proteins, which are then transported into the ER for further modification and folding. The ER also helps to transport these proteins to other parts of the cell.

4. What is the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum performs a variety of functions, including lipid metabolism, detoxification, and calcium storage. It is involved in the synthesis of lipids and steroids, and it helps to break down toxins and drugs in the liver. Additionally, the SER stores calcium ions that are important for cell signaling and muscle contraction.

5. How does the endoplasmic reticulum impact human health?

Any disruptions in the function of the endoplasmic reticulum can have significant impacts on human health. For example, defects in the ER can lead to protein misfolding and aggregation, which can cause diseases such as cystic fibrosis and Alzheimer's. Additionally, certain toxins and drugs can damage the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, leading to liver damage and other health issues.
