Electronics help recitifier with a zener diode

In summary, a zener diode is a specialized type of diode that maintains a constant voltage when the current exceeds a certain threshold. It is commonly used as a voltage regulator and for protection against voltage spikes. It helps with rectification by stabilizing the output voltage and has various applications in electronic circuits. Its key difference from a regular diode is its ability to operate in the reverse breakdown region. Some common applications include voltage regulation, protection, and as a component in oscillator circuits.

Homework Statement

Design a rectifier with a zener diode that satisfies the following:
Primary voltage = 120V @ 60Hz
VDC = 12V
IR2 = 100 mA (R2 being the load)
Vr(R2) <= .3V

Homework Equations

C=IDC/(2fVr)
IDC=IR3 + IR1

The Attempt at a Solution

I tried calculating the capacitor, but how am I supposed to get IDC if I don't have any other current?

Related to Electronics help recitifier with a zener diode

What is a zener diode?

A zener diode is a type of diode that is specifically designed to maintain a constant voltage across its terminals when the current through it exceeds a certain threshold. It is commonly used in electronic circuits as a voltage regulator or for protection against voltage spikes.

How does a zener diode help with rectification?

A zener diode can help with rectification by regulating the output voltage of a rectifier circuit. It ensures that the output voltage remains stable and does not exceed a certain level, even if the input voltage varies. This helps in achieving a more accurate and consistent output from the rectifier circuit.

What is the role of a zener diode in a rectifier circuit?

The role of a zener diode in a rectifier circuit is to regulate the output voltage and prevent it from exceeding a certain level. It acts as a voltage reference for the circuit and ensures that the output remains stable, even when there are changes in the input voltage.

How is a zener diode different from a regular diode?

A zener diode is different from a regular diode in that it is designed to operate in the reverse breakdown region, where it allows current to flow in the reverse direction without being damaged. This characteristic makes it useful for voltage regulation and protection, whereas regular diodes are used for rectification and current flow in one direction only.

What are some common applications of a zener diode?

Some common applications of a zener diode include voltage regulation, voltage reference, protection against voltage spikes, and as a component in oscillator circuits. They are also used in power supplies, battery charging circuits, and as a constant current source for LEDs.
