Electron diffraction diameter measurement

In summary, the speaker suggests that in electron diffraction experiments, the diffraction rings are often blurred and the best way to measure their diameter is to take a guess at the middle of the ring. This is similar to how measurements are taken on Debye-Scherrer films, spots on Laue diffractograms, and peaks on paper diffractograms. They also mention that the monochromatic character of a cathodic ray is not as good as other materials used in radiocrystallography.

Hello

In an electron diffraction experiment usually the diffraction rings are blurred. My question. If measuring the diameter, should I measure to the inside of the ring, the outside, or take a guess where the middle of the ring is and measure to there? Thanks

Yes, the monochromatic character of a cathodic ray is never as good as for the [itex]K\alpha[/itex] of cobalt, copper or molybdenum we use in radiocrystallography.
We always take the middle of the ring on Debye-Scherrer films, of the spots on Laue diffractograms, the summit of the peaks on paper diffractograms.

So guess the middle of your rings. No better way.

Related to Electron diffraction diameter measurement

1. What is electron diffraction diameter measurement?

Electron diffraction diameter measurement is a technique used in scientific research to determine the size of particles, such as atoms or molecules, by examining the patterns created when a beam of electrons is scattered off of the sample.

2. How is electron diffraction diameter measurement performed?

Electron diffraction diameter measurement is typically performed using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The sample is bombarded with a beam of electrons and the resulting diffraction pattern is recorded and analyzed to determine the size of the particles in the sample.

3. What are the advantages of using electron diffraction diameter measurement?

Electron diffraction diameter measurement allows for the determination of particle size at a much smaller scale than traditional optical microscopy. It also provides more accurate and precise measurements due to the shorter wavelength of electrons compared to visible light.

4. What are the limitations of electron diffraction diameter measurement?

One limitation of electron diffraction diameter measurement is that it requires specialized equipment, such as a TEM, which can be expensive and not easily accessible. Additionally, the sample must be able to withstand the high energy of the electron beam without being damaged.

5. How is electron diffraction diameter measurement used in scientific research?

Electron diffraction diameter measurement is used in a variety of scientific fields, such as materials science, chemistry, and biology. It can provide valuable information about the structure and composition of materials, as well as aid in the development of new technologies and products.
