I want to-

1. I want to make movies such as Historical War Movies. I want to make Science Fiction movies that are not based so much on Violence. Only the Science Fiction Movies i wish to make show the Beauty of that in Science and Life.(Movies such as, "2001 A Space Oddyssy", and "Mission to Mars" are perfect examples of the kind of Sci-Fi i want to make)

2. I want to learn how to write Classical Music, then i wish to write my own Classical Master Pieces and Operas.

3. I want to make my Contribution to Mathematics and Physics. Any specific areas I wish to Contribute to would be, Number Theory in Math and many areas of Theoretical Physics, as well as Cosmology, and Particle Physics(most probably they will be related to theoretical Physics).

4. I want to win the Nobel Prize with my planned Contributions in Math and Physics.

5. I want to Write books on my thoughts and ideas.

6. I want to travel and study the Universe by Space Ship.(If It were to be possible in any way or fashion I will try and do it). Considering it is best to travel the Universe and study it, then to stay on this planet and pay bills with money you earn from a Job you can't stand working in.

7. I want to take a trip to Neptunes Moon, Triton(If it were scientifically possible, i have not researched on the moons pressure, gravitational pull, temperature and other attributes of the moon that could effect me violently).

8. I want to go to one of the IVE LEAGUE Colleges in the U.S.A, and I wish to become a Professor of Math and Theoretical Physics at any of the IVY LEAGUE colleges.(Particularly- M.I.T, Princeton, or Yale)

9. I want to be a NASA Engineer.

Some of the things I want to do are Dreams, and some of the things I want to do are Goals. They are listed Above. I make Straight A's and i am just now starting Honors. Who knows If ill accomplish any of that in my list above. I just have to try my hardest and see what happens.

May I ask, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO? No matter where you are and where you are at, you still have a chance.

i was just recently struck by the fact that all i wanted to do in life was own a small nursery (the plant kind) in melbourne where i would sit all day smoking pot with my blue parrot called brunswick, emerging only to play for the melbourne symphony orchestra, also writing the occasional article for the newscientist for extra cash!

I want to know exactly what type of job I'm going to get with a Bachelor of Commerce (Management major) and a Bachelor of Science (Biochemistry & molecular biology + immunology & human pathology majors). In another words, i want lotsa money so i dun have to bother about doing something to make money, just do something that i want to do ! I hate it how scientists are payed virtually nothing in australia :(

ah wait.. musn't be selfish here. I want everything!

Get ready to be in school well into your thirties...

Oh, it doesn't matter. I can take college courses over the summer (like how I'm doing it now, to shorten my years in high school) and anyway, its worth it.

How are 2 Phds worth it? You could just do one which combines physics and computing.

Such as in quantum computing.

Oh, what in the world is quantum computing??! This could mean I could get another PhD! cool!

Three PhD's, please now you're just talking silly...

Just for the record though I've never heard of a place that actually offers a program in quantum computing, at least not yet, maybe sometime down the road...

My plan is to do a double major of computer science and quantum mechanics, and the rest is pretty self explanatory.

Actually, that would be FOUR PhDs right there!

As for what I want . . . I've narrowed it down to: I want to be happy.
That way whatever I do, or don't, is all cool.

I'm also pretty certain there's not a college on Earth that offers a major in quantum mechanics ... perhaps you meant to say physics?

I guess. Either that or just computer science with a specific interest in quantum computing and AI. I haven't really researched the majors that well yet, as I still have 2 years before I go of to college. The main two I'm considering are CS and aerospace engineering.

I want to be cool, like the fonz.

I want to be able to control machinery by simply punching it, like the fonz.

I want to have loser friends who make me look *even* cooler, like the fonz.

But I don't ever want to look like Henry Winkler.

I also want a decent excuse to join the French Foriegn Legion and get away from all this tiresome university business.

Man, fonz, now that is cool, certainly a worthy goal!

You know it! I mean, there's only so far in life you can get on a PhD, they're virtually useless outside Academia and research, but being the Fonz? That'll take you straight to the top. Not only was he the divinely appointed monarch of the world of cool, but he had a successful career in amature dramatics, lecturing in car maintenance, and as a mechanic.

Chachee was the filth, though.

There are plenty of places in which you can study quantum computing.
You could go for the maths side and study quantum information and quantum probability (applications in q-computing), or the physics side and study NMR, optics etc. or go down computing side and get involved with algorithms or error correction.

At most of the major universities, I would be very surprised if there wasn't a supervisor in at least one of these areas willing to supervise a Phd in the area with applications to quantum computing.

To get onto the Phd course, you would have a very good first degree in physics/maths/ computing depending on area of specialism.

Aye, one of the stated research activities where I am is Quantum Information and Quantum Computation, both in the Mathematics department, and in the Theoretical Physics research Group. It's all part of whatever topics are seen as most 'popular' and potential moneyspinners. In the mid 90's it was all Biochemistry, now you'd be hard pressed to find a University that wasn't pouring resources into and creating PhD placements in the fields of Genetics (particularly the prospect of stem cell research), Quantum Computation, and Nanotechnology (the university I'm at is currently in the process of building a centre for research into Nanotechnology).

Of course, this happens much to the displeasure of other research groups who can only watch as their funding fluctuates with the changes in whatever's the latest topic to get the research councils and Parliamentary Ministers excited

Although most, if not all decent universities here seem to state entry requirements for a research degree to be a 2:1 (US equivalent a GPA of about 3.0), I'd agree that to get a place in a field so 'popular' you'd probably need a good First and some pretty damn happy references.

This is very disappointing thread. It seems acquiring a PhD is thought to be the goal for many rather than the means to achieve a goal. By the end of the junior year in HS, one should have a good concept of what his career path would be, certainly by the time when it is necessary to select a major.

Regards

Hey! I said I wanted to be a latter day Fonz, and even went on to say that PhD's were useless in comparison to Fonzness!

A Phd is a good goal to have.
To say that in 10 years time you want a Phd is a reasonable goal to get through the education system. It says nothing about any subsequent desire to be e.g. a lecturer or professor.

I fail to see where your dissapointment comes from.
