In summary: So, based on this, you can try to figure out the relationships between the individuals in the tree. In summary, the goal of the assignment is to identify the relationships between the grandmother, mother, and daughter using a DNA blast and the attached tree. The results from the blast show that there are 11 groups with varying numbers of sequences and scores. By analyzing the tree, one can determine the relative relatedness between individuals and use this information to deduce the relationships between the grandmother, mother, and daughter. However, further research is needed to justify the specific relationships.

Homework Statement

By running a DNA blast, we need to identify who is the grandmother, mother, and daughter. And how/why do we know their relationship.

The tree is attached.

Homework Equations

Here are some of the results from blast, I'm not sure if they will help:
Group 1: Sequences: 2 Score:7298
Group 2: Sequences: 2 Score:7245
Group 3: Sequences: 3 Score:7127
Group 4: Sequences: 4 Score:7118
Group 5: Sequences: 2 Score:7448
Group 6: Sequences: 3 Score:7448
Group 7: Sequences: 4 Score:7354
Group 8: Sequences: 8 Score:7075
Group 9: Sequences: 10 Score:7108
Group 10: Sequences: 11 Score:7029
Group 11: Sequences: 12 Score:6977

The Attempt at a Solution

Just by looking at the tree, my guess will be 4 is the grandmother, 6 is the mother, and either 9 or 13 is the daughter. However, I can't justify it.
Where should I look?

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you all.

I don't know enough about this method to help you all the way through the problem, but one thing to keep in mind is that the distance between any two individuals in the tree indicates their relative relatedness. In other words, if the line connecting two individuals is very short, they are closely related, and if it's very long, they are very distantly related.

As an example, 5 and 11 are very closely related, while 5 and 8 are more distantly related.

it is important to approach this question with caution and not make assumptions based on initial observations. While the results from the DNA blast may give some clues, it is not enough to definitively determine the relationships between the individuals in the tree. It is important to consider other factors such as the ages and genders of the individuals and additional genetic testing.

To accurately determine the grandmother, mother, and daughter, we would need to perform DNA testing that specifically looks at genetic markers that are passed down through the maternal line. This would allow us to trace the inheritance of DNA from grandmother to mother to daughter and confirm their relationships.

Additionally, it is important to note that DNA alone cannot determine familial relationships. Other factors such as shared environments and upbringing also play a role in shaping individuals and their traits. Therefore, it is important to consider all aspects and not rely solely on genetic testing.

In summary, while the DNA blast results may provide some insights, further testing and consideration of other factors are necessary to accurately determine the grandmother, mother, and daughter in this family tree.

Related to DNA family tree: who is the grandmother, mother, and daughter?

1. Who is the grandmother in a DNA family tree?

The grandmother in a DNA family tree is the mother of the father or mother of the individual.

2. Who is the mother in a DNA family tree?

The mother in a DNA family tree is the female parent of the individual.

3. Who is the daughter in a DNA family tree?

The daughter in a DNA family tree is the female child of the individual.

4. How is the grandmother, mother, and daughter determined in a DNA family tree?

The grandmother, mother, and daughter are determined through genetic testing and analysis of shared DNA amongst family members.

5. Are DNA family trees always accurate in determining relationships?

While DNA family trees can provide valuable information about genetic relationships, they may not always be 100% accurate due to factors such as incomplete genetic data or unexpected genetic variations.
