In summary, the question is asking for the minimum number of cuts needed to be made in a chain with 89 links, with the stipulation that the son must break off new links each week for 123 weeks. The answer is 4, with the cuts being made on links 6, 17, 38, and 79. This results in one 5-link piece, one 10-link piece, one 20-link piece, one 40-link piece, and four one-link pieces being taken back at the end of each week. The table above illustrates this concept with the first few

Brain Teaser #4??

What is the explanation. It seems totally incorrect.

If the son is going to stay 123 weeks - and each week he HAS TO break off new links.

Then he MUST break off something each of the 123 weeks.

Explain the question...

The minimum number of cuts needed to be made is 4 for a chain with 89 links.
If the links are numbered serially from 1 to 89, then the cuts would be made on the following links:
6, 17, 38, and 79.

This would result in 4 one-link pieces, one 5-link piece, one 10-link piece, one 20-link piece, one 40-link piece, and one 10 piece.

To gain a better understandstanding, consider the scenario in the first few weeks as illustrated in the table below.

Weeks: Gold Links Given:
1 1
2 1 + 1
3 1 + 1 + 1
4 1 + 1 + 1 + 1
5 5
6 5 + 1
7 5 + 1 + 1
8 5 + 1 + 1 + 1
9 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1
10 10
11 10 + 1
12 10 + 1

The table above indicates that:
at the end of the fifth week, the 5-link piece is given and the 4 one-link pieces are taken back;
at the end of the tenth week, the 10-link piece is given and the 4 one-link pieces as well as the 5-link piece are taken back.

Edit: 12 - 10 + 1 + 1

1. How is the 123 week timeline determined?

The 123 week timeline is determined based on previous data and calculations. It takes into account the average duration of a week and the necessary breaks without skipping a week.

2. What factors affect the ability to break off links for 123 weeks?

There are several factors that can affect the ability to break off links for 123 weeks. These include unexpected events or delays, changes in resources or personnel, and any external factors that may impact the project timeline.

3. How will the breaks be managed during the 123 week period?

The breaks will be managed carefully and strategically to ensure that they do not disrupt the overall timeline. This may involve shifting resources or adjusting the workload to accommodate the breaks without impacting the project progress.

4. Is it possible to complete the project within the 123 week timeframe?

Yes, it is possible to complete the project within the 123 week timeframe if all factors are accounted for and managed effectively. However, it is important to be flexible and adaptable in case any unexpected challenges arise.

5. How will the breaks impact the overall project timeline and outcome?

The breaks may slightly impact the overall project timeline, but they are necessary to ensure the well-being of the team and the success of the project. Breaks can also provide opportunities for reflection and improvement, which can ultimately have a positive impact on the project outcome.
