What Religion Might You Be According to the Beleif-O-Matic Quiz?

In summary, the conversation was about a website called "Belief-O-Matic" that allows users to answer questions about their beliefs and returns a list of religions that they are most likely to align with. The results were found to be interesting and sometimes unexpected, with Orthodox Judaism and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints being among the top results for some users. Some participants found the reduction of complex religious beliefs to standardized dogma to be disturbing, while others saw it as just a fun activity.

[SOLVED] Beleif-O-Matic

Not quite sure where to put this but here seemed as good a place as any. This link seemed kind of interesting and pretty fun. You answer the question about how you think about god and religion and it returns what your most likely religions are. Kind of interesting, it picked mine really close.

ps to the moderators: please feel free to move this were you think it fits best if you think it doesn't belong here.

Heres the top ten results it gave me:

1. Orthodox Judaism (100%)
2. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (96%)
3. Eastern Orthodox (95%)
4. Roman Catholic (95%)
5. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (92%)
6. Jehovah's Witness (92%)
7. Orthodox Quaker (90%)
8. Seventh Day Adventist (88%)
9. Islam (88%)
10. Hinduism (78%)

[EDIT:] Hmmm, I went back and played around with the answers a litte bit just to see what it would do to how the different religions stacked up. For some of the questions there was two that fit me pretty well so I'd adjust them and I varied the importance level on the answers a little bit too. For the most part it all stayed the same with Orthodox Judaism still being the top and very little happening with the rest of the list. Except for one time when I changed the question about the nature of God, that time it put Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-Day Saints at the top, dropped Orthodox Judaism to 6th-ish (the first time it got knocked out of #1) put Jehovah's Witness higher and knocked out Hinduism all together. Pretty interesting.

that test was more like a political alignment test with a bit of standardized dogma that ranked you in the generally accepted standpoints of various religious organizations. the standings of the various religious on the list that i have study compared to my actual opinion on the respective theologies is a testament to how scewed an opinion can be when generated by generalized polling.

just for the laugh of it, here is the whole list:

1. Bahá'í Faith (100%)
2. Liberal Quakers (86%)
3. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (85%)
4. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (84%)
5. Unitarian Universalism (79%)
6. Neo-Pagan (78%)
7. Jehovah's Witness (77%)
8. New Age (75%)
9. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (68%)
10. Sikhism (66%)
11. Reform Judaism (66%)
12. Mahayana Buddhism (65%)
13. Jainism (58%)
14. Orthodox Judaism (55%)
15. Orthodox Quaker (55%)
16. Islam (53%)
17. Hinduism (52%)
18. Taoism (52%)
19. Theravada Buddhism (48%)
20. New Thought (47%)
21. Secular Humanism (47%)
22. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (46%)
23. Scientology (39%)
24. Seventh Day Adventist (33%)
25. Nontheist (23%)
26. Eastern Orthodox (20%)
27. Roman Catholic (20%)

i read up on Bahá'í Faith a bit to find while i do share someone similar opinions in a few respects a lot of it sounds like some heaven's gate cult or something. no offence if anyone happens to be a Bahá'íist or however the hell you would say that, i am sure it's got its finer points and i am not trying to imply that anyone is suicidal but what i have seen of it does little to match up with my own theology.

hu, i found it downright disturbing to see theology reduced to such standards, especially on a placed called "beliefnet.com"; they should call it whore_of_babylon.com or something.

1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)
2. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (96%)
3. Secular Humanism (91%)
4. Liberal Quakers (88%)
5. Neo-Pagan (72%)
6. Nontheist (71%)

Apparently it doesn't consider belief in God as a necessary component of mainline Protestant. :)

Okay maybe when you look at it in such a view ... and if anyone was to actually use this to try and find a religion for themselves, that is downright disturbing, but I was just looking at it for kicks and giggles nothing serious meant of it. I mean in the same light personallity tests should be one of the most disturbing things around, I mean reducing all of human kind to such standards, but when taken for face value entertainment purposes I see nothing wrong with them...

Hmm... Is it me, or is it that Universal Unitarianism is on 100% for all atheists?

  • #13
As far as I know from America, the Unitarians are the only church in America that welcomes atheists and agnostics. But all sorts of folks go there, from christians through to pagans and those that don't believe.

Pffttt... stupid unitarian Universalism. Why bother having it there.
It was through taking this test many years ago that I learned what Secular Humanism was. It does most accurately represent my beliefs I guess, but the actual 'Humanists' still care too much. I really couldn't give...you know what, about most things. SO I am not an activbely practicing Humanist

I could be considered an active Transhumanist though.. since I am actively seeking a cure for old age.

Curious link. As bizarre answers I obtained shikism and scientology.

oo that was fun. No surprises though. I don't hesitate to admit I'm a tree-hugging dirt worshipper. Though.. after reading everyone elses results, I'm kinda feeling like an oddball around these parts.

I expect that the Unitarian Universalism comes up because the agonistic/atheist crowd doesn't really think many of the things on the list are all that important.

As usual, many of the questions are poorly phrased or ambiguous. What, for example, does the questionaire mean by fundemental?
