Compute the grade point average (GPA)

In summary, GPA (grade point average) is a numerical representation of a student's academic performance, calculated by averaging grades received in all courses taken during a specific period of time. It is determined by assigning a numerical value to each letter grade received, multiplying it by the number of credit hours for the course, and then dividing the total by the number of credit hours taken. While a higher GPA is generally desirable, it is not the only factor considered by colleges and employers. However, a GPA can be improved through hard work and dedication, with a GPA above 3.0 generally considered good and above 3.5 considered excellent. a student earned grades of A, C, A, A, and B. Those courses had these corresponding numbers. of credit hours:1,6,3,1,3. The grading system assigns quality points to letter grades as follows: A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, and F=0. Compute the grade point average (GPA) and round the result to two decimal places

Hello, and welcome to MHB! (Wave)

What you want to use here is a weighted average:

\(\displaystyle \text{GPA}=\frac{1(4)+6(2)+3(4)+1(4)+3(3)}{1+6+3+1+3}=\frac{41}{14}\approx2.93\)

Does that make sense?

What is a GPA?

A GPA, or grade point average, is a numerical representation of a student's academic performance. It is calculated by averaging the grades received in all courses taken during a specific period of time, typically a semester or academic year.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by assigning a numerical value to each letter grade received in a course (for example, A=4, B=3, C=2, etc.), multiplying it by the number of credit hours for the course, and then dividing the total by the number of credit hours taken. This process is repeated for all courses and the resulting numbers are averaged to determine the GPA.

Is a higher GPA always better?

While a high GPA is generally desirable, it is not the only factor that colleges and employers consider when evaluating a student's performance. Other factors, such as extracurricular activities, work experience, and test scores, also play a role in the overall evaluation.

Can a GPA be improved?

Yes, a GPA can be improved through hard work and dedication. Students can strive to earn higher grades in their courses, retake classes to replace lower grades, or take additional courses to raise their overall GPA.

What is considered a good GPA?

The definition of a "good" GPA may vary depending on the institution or employer. Generally, a GPA above 3.0 is considered good, while a GPA above 3.5 is considered excellent. However, it is important to remember that GPA is just one aspect of a student's overall performance and should not be the sole determinant of success.
