Chemistry: pH after adding water

In summary, to find the new concentration of OH^{-} in a solution of potassium hydroxide (pH = 11.65) that has been diluted with water to six times the original volume at 298.15 K (25 degrees Celcius), you can use the formula c_{1}v_{1}=c_{2}v_{2} where c is concentration and v is volume. First, find the initial concentration of OH^{-}, then use the formula and given information to calculate the new concentration.

I am trying to find what the new concentration of [tex]OH^{-}[/tex] in a solution of potassium hydroxide (pH = 11.65) is after diluting it with water to six times the original volume. It is at 298.15 K (25 degrees Celcius).

I have found the concentration of [tex]H_{3}O^{+}[/tex] and I guessed that I just multiply the volume times six (divide the concentration by six) to find the new concentration, would this be a correct way to approach this problem?

[tex]c_{1}v_{1}=c_{2}v_{2}[/tex]

where c is concentration and v is volume. Find the initial [OH-], then use the above formula and the information given to find the new concentration.

Yes, your approach is correct. The concentration of OH^{-} in a solution of potassium hydroxide can be calculated by taking the negative logarithm of the hydroxide ion concentration, which is equal to the concentration of potassium hydroxide. So, if you dilute the solution by a factor of six, the concentration of OH^{-} will decrease by a factor of six as well. This means that the new concentration of OH^{-} can be calculated by dividing the original concentration by six. Keep in mind that this calculation assumes ideal behavior and does not take into account any potential changes in temperature or pressure. Overall, your approach is a good way to estimate the new concentration of OH^{-} in the solution after dilution with water.

Related to Chemistry: pH after adding water

1. What is pH and how does it change after adding water?

pH is a measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution. It is determined by the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) present in the solution. Adding water to a solution can change its pH by diluting the concentration of hydrogen ions, making the solution more neutral.

2. Why is pH important in chemistry?

pH is important in chemistry because it affects the chemical reactions and properties of substances. It can also indicate the level of acidity or basicity of a solution, which is important in many industrial processes and biological systems.

3. What is the difference between pH and pOH?

pH and pOH are both measures of the acidity or basicity of a solution, but they measure different aspects. pH measures the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) while pOH measures the concentration of hydroxide ions (OH-). They are related through the equation pH + pOH = 14.

4. How does the addition of an acid or base affect pH when water is added?

Adding an acid or base to a solution can change its pH depending on the strength and concentration of the acid or base. Acids increase the concentration of hydrogen ions, making the solution more acidic, while bases decrease the concentration of hydrogen ions, making the solution more basic.

5. How can the pH of a solution be measured after adding water?

The pH of a solution can be measured using a pH meter or pH paper. These tools use a color-changing indicator to give a numerical value for the pH of a solution. It is important to note that the pH of a solution can also be estimated by its taste, smell, or appearance, but these methods are not as accurate as using a pH meter or paper.
