Chemistry: molecules in space

In summary, according to the VSEPR theory, molecules orient themselves in a way that minimizes repulsion and maximizes stability. The two known structures of propane, an open chain and cyclopropane, suggest that cyclopropane is the most stable due to its orientation. However, there is a question about bond angles and whether they play a role in stability.

The VSEPR theory states that whenever a molecule forms, it orients itself in space such that the repulsion is min and stability is maximum..now when propane forms their are 2 structures known one is propane(open chain) other is cyclopropane..

If VSEPR theory is not wrong then its cyclopropane where there's max stability and thus it's only cyclopropane which should exist as just when C3H6 will form it will orient itself to undergo min repulsion and that's cyclopropane..so how can "open chain" C3H6 exist?

What makes you think cyclopropane is the most stable molecule? What about bond angles?

Related to Chemistry: molecules in space

1. What is the significance of studying molecules in space?

Studying molecules in space can give scientists a better understanding of the origins and evolution of our universe. It also helps us understand the chemical processes that occur in space, which can have implications for the formation of planets and potential for life.

2. How do scientists detect molecules in space?

Scientists use a variety of methods, including spectroscopy and radio telescopes, to detect and analyze molecules in space. These techniques allow them to identify the chemical composition and structure of molecules in different regions of space.

3. What types of molecules have been discovered in space?

Scientists have discovered a wide range of molecules in space, including simple ones like water, carbon monoxide, and ammonia, as well as more complex ones like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and amino acids. These molecules have been found in various environments, such as interstellar clouds, planetary atmospheres, and even around comets.

4. How do molecules in space form?

Molecules in space can form through a variety of processes, including chemical reactions between atoms, collisions between particles, and radiation-induced reactions. These processes are influenced by factors such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of other molecules.

5. What can the study of molecules in space tell us about Earth's atmosphere?

Studying molecules in space can provide insight into the chemical processes that occur in Earth's atmosphere, as many of the same molecules and reactions are present in both environments. This can help us understand the composition and behavior of our atmosphere, and how it may have changed over time.
