Chemical name for 12 protons and 10 electrons?

In summary, the chemical name for an element with 12 protons and 10 electrons is magnesium 2+. The number of protons, or atomic number, gives the identity of the element. Looking up 12 on the periodic table will give you its name. If an atom has less electrons than protons, it is a positively charged ion. Combining this with the information that the element has 10 electrons and 12 protons, we can determine its symbol, which is Mg 2+.

protons give the identity of the element, the number of protons is the atomic number

a) look on the periodic table, and look up 12, what is its name

b) if an atom has less electrons than protons, what kind of ion is it?

put a) and b) together and you have the name

c) if it has 10 electrons and 12 protons what is its charge?

put a) and c) together and you get its symbol

Related to Chemical name for 12 protons and 10 electrons?

1. What is the chemical name for an atom with 12 protons and 10 electrons?

The chemical name for an atom with 12 protons and 10 electrons is magnesium (Mg).

2. Why is the number of protons important in determining the chemical name?

The number of protons in an atom determines its atomic number, which is used to identify and classify elements in the periodic table. Each element has a unique number of protons, which is the basis for its chemical name.

3. How do protons and electrons affect the properties of an element?

The number of protons in an atom determines its atomic number, which is used to identify and classify elements in the periodic table. Each element has a unique number of protons, which is the basis for its chemical name.

4. Can the chemical name of an element change based on the number of protons and electrons?

Yes, the chemical name of an element can change if the number of protons or electrons changes. This can result in a different element or isotope of the same element with a different chemical name.

5. What are the other properties of an element that are affected by the number of protons and electrons?

The number of protons and electrons also affect an element's atomic mass, chemical reactivity, and physical properties such as melting and boiling points. These properties can vary for different isotopes of the same element with different numbers of protons and electrons.
