In summary, the pressure exerted by an elephant with a mass of 4000 kg on the ground, with a leg diameter of 25 cm, is calculated to be 799390 Pa. However, this may not be the correct answer as it does not specify the number of legs the elephant has. Based on the given information, it is assumed that the elephant has four legs.

Homework Statement

Calculate the pressure that an elephant with a mass of 4000 kg on the ground as the diameter of his legs is 25 cm

Homework Equations

P=F/A
F=mxg

The Attempt at a Solution

pressure = F/ A
diameter = 25 cm =>0.25m
I suppose his leg has form of circle so A = 3.14x (0.125)^2=0.049087
F=mass x g
F=4000kg x 9.81
F=39240 N
Thus,
P= 39240N / 0.049087 m^2 = 799390 Pa
But the answer should be 2.000x10^5 Pa

How many legs does an elephant have... :smile:

Related to Calculate Pressure: Elephant Mass 4000 kg, Leg Diam 25 cm

1. What is the formula for calculating pressure?

The formula for calculating pressure is pressure = force / area. In this case, the force is equal to the weight of the elephant, and the area is the cross-sectional area of its leg.

2. How do you convert kg to N for the weight of the elephant?

Kilograms (kg) is a unit of mass, while Newtons (N) is a unit of force. To convert from kg to N, you can use the conversion factor of 9.8 N/kg. So, for a 4000 kg elephant, the weight in Newtons would be 4000 kg x 9.8 N/kg = 39,200 N.

3. What is the unit of measurement for pressure?

The unit of measurement for pressure is Pascal (Pa). However, other commonly used units for pressure include pounds per square inch (psi) and atmospheres (atm).

4. Can you determine the pressure of the elephant's leg on the ground?

Yes, we can determine the pressure of the elephant's leg on the ground by using the formula mentioned in question 1. We would need to know the weight of the elephant and the surface area of its leg in contact with the ground.

5. Will the pressure change if the diameter of the elephant's leg changes?

Yes, the pressure will change if the diameter of the elephant's leg changes. This is because pressure is inversely proportional to the area, so as the leg diameter increases, the pressure decreases, and vice versa.
