I'm not complaining, just expressing my amazement that a thread on asteroids could go so far south that it fell off the earth. The last I read were my own posts. Surely they aren't what killed the thread.
Asteroids are considered controversial because of their potential to impact Earth and cause significant damage. They are also controversial due to their potential for containing valuable resources and the ethical implications of mining them.
Asteroids impact Earth relatively frequently, with small ones (less than 10 meters in diameter) striking the planet almost daily. Larger impacts (greater than 1 kilometer in diameter) occur less frequently, with the last one occurring about 66 million years ago.
While we can track and monitor asteroids in our solar system, it is difficult to predict when one will impact Earth. However, efforts are being made to develop technologies that can deflect or destroy an asteroid if it is on a collision course with Earth.
Yes, there are a few known controversial asteroids, such as Apophis, which was initially thought to have a significant chance of impacting Earth in the future. There is also the asteroid 16 Psyche, which is believed to be made primarily of valuable metals and has sparked debates about the ethics of asteroid mining.
Studying asteroids can provide valuable insights into the formation and evolution of our solar system. Additionally, they may contain valuable resources that could be mined for use on Earth or in space exploration. By understanding the composition and behavior of asteroids, we can also better prepare for potential impacts in the future.
