Acids and Bases and Their Reactions

In summary, oxalic acid, found in certain plants, can provide two hydronium ions in water. The balanced equations for the formation of the first and second H3O+ ions are H2C2O4 + H2O -> H3O+ + HC2O4- and HC2O4- + H2O -> H3O+ + C2O4-2. Oxalic acid behaves as an acid and dissociates in water to form H3O+ ions.

Homework Statement

Oxalic acid, H2C2O4, which is found in certain pants, can provide two hydronium ions in water. Write balanced equations to show how oxalic acid can supply one and then a second H3O+ ion.

Homework Equations

There's not really an equation, and if there is please don't make me feel stupid.

The Attempt at a Solution

I don't really even know how to start.

You must try something. Oxalic acid reacts with water, how? Water is an acid or a base, depending on what is present with it. Oxalic acid will behave as an acid. How does the H3O+1, hydronium ion form?

Do you know how to write dissociation equation for any acid?

I think I figured it out:

H2C2O4 + H2O -> H3O+ + HC2O4-

HC2O4- + H2O -> H3O+ + C2O4-2

In which pants do you find oxalic acid?

Are you sure you asked what you wanted to ask?

Related to Acids and Bases and Their Reactions

1. What are acids and bases?

Acids and bases are two types of substances that have opposite properties. Acids are sour in taste, can corrode certain materials, and have a pH value less than 7. Bases, on the other hand, are bitter in taste, feel slippery to the touch, and have a pH value greater than 7.

2. What is the difference between a strong acid and a weak acid?

A strong acid is a substance that completely dissociates into its ions when placed in water, while a weak acid only partially dissociates. This means that a strong acid has a higher concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in solution, making it more acidic compared to a weak acid.

3. How do acids and bases react with each other?

When an acid and a base are mixed, they undergo a neutralization reaction. In this reaction, the hydrogen ions from the acid and the hydroxide ions from the base combine to form water, while the remaining ions combine to form a salt. This results in a pH value of 7, which is neutral.

4. What are some common examples of acids and bases?

Some common examples of acids include lemon juice, vinegar, and battery acid. Bases include substances like baking soda, bleach, and ammonia. Many household cleaning products are also either acids or bases.

5. How are acids and bases used in everyday life and in industries?

Acids and bases have many uses in everyday life and in industries. Acids are used in the production of fertilizers, batteries, and medicines. Bases are used in the production of soaps and detergents, as well as in the manufacture of paper and textiles. They are also used in food preservation and in the treatment of wastewater.
