Are moderators abusing their power on this discussion site?

    1. Ask innocent questions and moderators shut down your thread 2. Other moderators then up vote the moderator that shut down the thread 3. You can't even ask why the thread was shut down 4. Moderators then feel powerful and cycle repeats itself Solution is obviously to stop using the site...

Propulsion by Cosmic Particle Deflection: A New Idea?

What about the attached as a means of propulsion? It would be a spacecraft with a long magnet in the front. Attached on one side by boons the magnet would have a reflector/deflector or shield of some type e.g. aluminum. In interstellar space there would be charged cosmic particles moving in...

I What do you call a parallelepiped that isn't a cube?

I think parallelepipeds are a subset of Prisms. I need a subset of a parallelepiped. But thank you.

I What do you call a parallelepiped that isn't a cube?

I was curious what you would call a parallelepiped that isn't a cube and isn't a rectangle and isn't just a rhombohedron? Here is my problem...I need to describe an oblique/tilted parallelepiped but if I just say 'parallelepiped' that would include a cube or rectangle (which I am not referring...

B Can Reversing an Airfoil on a Prop Plane Still Create Lift?

Hi was trying to figure out what would happen if you reversed the wing of a standard prop plane? for example...the thinner wedge is towards the front. Would you still get lift? I suppose not since there is a reason the rounded/thicker edge is facing towards the front. but why not?

Is it more efficient to eject burnt fuel as reaction mass in rockets?

Is it more energy efficient to throw a large object slower than a slower object faster? For example, suppose a 100kg person out in space threw a 10 kg object away from themselves at 1 m/s. that means that the 100 kg person would move in the opposite direction at .1 m/s. And this should take...

I Revolutionize Space Travel with Innovative Vacuum Launch Method

Yes, you overcome gravity by inputting all the kinetic energy required into the launch vehicle before it leaves the side of the mountain. Yes, the greatest technical challenge/impossibility would be extending a tube an additional 30K meters into space but when I think of the forces they don't...

I Revolutionize Space Travel with Innovative Vacuum Launch Method

The difference though is that all the energy needed for launch is given at the ground. Whereas for a 747 you are only 20K meters up and you still have 300K meters to go against gravity. So imagine the space shuttle ... most of the weight is with the fuel needed to accelerate the fuel.

I Revolutionize Space Travel with Innovative Vacuum Launch Method

I know magnetic launch tracks on the side of mountains has been proposed before but what if... you vacuum the inside of the launch track on the side of the mountain and extend the tube up from about 5K meters to 30K meters? The tube on the side of the mountain would be made of a strong metal...

Gravity wave cancellation cause space expansion?

Is it possible that the increased acceleration of the universe could be caused by the cancellation of gravity waves? If not, what would be the impact on space-time when gravity waves do cancel out?

Perception & Relativity: Near-Light Speed Travel

okay, thank you. I find it interesting on the possibility that an alien intelligence could evolve to process large time dilation effects. For example, an alien that evolved in an extreme gravity well or around a very fast black hole (implausible but just for speculation). Suppose that alien...

Perception & Relativity: Near-Light Speed Travel

Is it appropriate to talk about objects that can travel 'near' the speed of light? E.g. compared to a hypothetical observer moving at 'near' zero speed (very close to zero temperature/energy) wouldn't we seem to be moving 'close' to the speed of light. E.g. isn't even traveling 3 meters/second...

    Can gravitational waves cancel out?

Can gravitational waves be treated like light or water waves? E.g. what would happen if two waves intersected at their max amplitude? Or what would happen if they intersected at a peak and trough?

Conservation of momentum or kinetic energy?

Thank you both. I see I did miscalculate and it should be .5J for the human. The 10m/s is supposed to be absolute. So the question wasn't properly stated. I calculated the velocity of each object by using conservation of momentum. The sphere is traveling at 10m/s and is 1kg so the human is 100kg...

Conservation of momentum or kinetic energy?

Homework Statement A 100 kg person in space throws a 1kg sphere away from their body. The sphere starts from rest and ends up traveling 10 m/s away from the person. What is the kinetic energy of the person and the kinetic energy of the sphere? Is kinetic energy conserved?[/B]Homework Equations...
