Engineering Transition to Different Engineering Discipline?

Yeah. It was extremely interesting to learn and overall nuclear science is pretty great. For me the problem is where the jobs seem to be located along with the actual work itself. For example a civil or mechanical engineer can go see in person the fruits of their labor. For me, I see computer...

Engineering Transition to Different Engineering Discipline?

Does anyone have any advice on transferring to a different engineering discipline? I currently have a BS/MS in nuclear engineering and I'm really growing to dislike it after a little more than 2 years in the workforce. How feasible is it to transition into another field such as electrical or...

    Nuclear Engineering Radiation Risks?

I do criticality safety analysis, look at fuel pellet and absorber performance, and support some detector systems. I ended up at at a national lab with a BS/MS in nuclear engineering. They give me mid 70's but also DOE froze salaries for 2 years. Its a good gig but I am pretty unhappy with it...

    Nuclear Engineering Radiation Risks?

No more than natural background for this nuclear engineer. All I do is sit in front of a computer all day, I don't get near anything radioactive (or see anything interesting)

    Contemporary issues in crit safety?

After a brief venture over into the medical/RHP side of things, I find myself drawn back into nuclear engineering. Glad it happened before I got too deep into something else! I've just started working on my MS, and I am trying to find some sort of direction for myself. Anyways, one subset of...

Courses What can I expect from 3rd year engineering courses?

Agreed! For me my junior year presented the biggest challenge.

Courses What can I expect from 3rd year engineering courses?

For me it was much harder. No reason you can't do well though if you have a good understanding of the fundamentals. It seemed like the took specific topics you went over in your year-long calculus based physics class, and made an entire term out of it, covering it in depth.

Create Accurate MCNP Phantom Templates for Radiation Dose Calculations

I have some MCNP experience, mostly criticality/Keff calculations with lattices of boxes and cylinders. Reactor fuel assemblies, fuel storage vaults, etc. This is all my class at the uni plus a MCNP class by Forrest Brown at a national lab really taught us. The health/medical physics photon...

Create Accurate MCNP Phantom Templates for Radiation Dose Calculations

Does anyone know if there are templates for things such as the ICRP 23 reference man (70kg)? I am trying to create one for a little side project I am doing (calculating the photon dose my friend gets from sleeping next to his cat that has been treated with I-131). I am trying to create the...

Engineering is not what you (they) thought

Im about to graduate in 2 weeks and I feel a little disappointed. I did good in my classes (cum laude) and understand most of the material pretty well. I even enjoyed learning the majority of it, nuclear physics is some pretty exciting stuff, and I am very glad I worked hard to learn it. My...

    Must haves classic textbooks?

Heres a few for anyone interested in nuclear engineering/physics. They are geared towards engineering however they would be useful to a physicist as well Id imagine. From just about everyone I have talked to, the following two books are considered "The Bible" for their topic...

1000 years to improve on gunpowder

I heard of these electric guns. If they had them in rifles and hanguns perhaps Id use one for range fun but I would never trust my life to it. I would imagine they keep the same mechanism due to the fact that it works really well and what is at stake if they screw up. I spoke with some...

Engineering and hands on work? (nuclear)

Im a little over a month away from my BS in nuclear engineering and have been accepted into grad school. I am not sure I am all that thrilled with it right now though. When I started studying NE, I pictured myself working in a big nuclear facility, being amongst the equipment, working in...

First students through a new program?

Our university is in the process of creating a new graduate program (MS/PhD), and it is in the final stages of approval. They expect everything to be finalized in the next couple of months, and will begin accepting students in July for fall 2007. For the first few years class size will be capped...

Kilograms & Slugs: Solving the Units Paradox

got it. seems like it's just a common language vs. scientifically correct terms issue then.
