I am 16 with a passion for physics, I am not by any means a genius but I am good at physics and best in the year (based on results). I've read on degree choices that a degree in physics is like a VIP pass to jobs as it shows you can think logically etc.

Before I sound stupid I am only at GCSE level (high school in America) so understanding is little. But theoretically could an alpha particle (helium nucleus) gain electrons and become a helium atom. If this is possible can it be done with two beta particles?

I was just wondering if a machine could be said to be 100% efficient if for example it gave out heat, light and sound but all I these types of energy are wanted and not wasted?

I think your taking free wrong. Free means free to move within the solution. They use free for electrolysis as an ionic compound can only conduct electricity when a liquid and when the ions are free
Or you could think of it in the context of salt farms. The water evaporates of leaving the salt behind which is collected. So the salt cannot evaporate of with the water (probably because its too heavy)
