Slack string on linear slides when using a different slide lengths

We have multiple 400mm length linear slides as used in the FIRST tech challenge robotics. However, our very last and innermost set of slides are 300mm length mounted such that they are not closer to the end of the extension (the black slides in the picture). We are having a lot of trouble...

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

Would it be easier to do that if I create a rubber counter mold, more sliceable? I assume with some math I can correlate the microscope image to actual measurements based on the magnification of the lens, then with some image software get measurements of all the peaks and valleys. If I...

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

I suppose by roughness I mean flatness. I have 3D printed samples with varying parameters that I want to see how they effect the top surface. I am mainly looking for depth measurement because the visual differences seem to mostly be sagging in areas without as much infill pattern (intentional)...

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

I got a rough laser speckle pattern with a laser pointer and a backwards camera zoom lens, but I think that is too fine because I cant see the speckle good over the visual surface texture in the print.

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

I think I am seeing a difference between the roughness when i briefly tested some random prints I had lying around. The resulting ”reflection” beam seems shorter for more pitted textures, is that right? If i point the laser parallel to the grain then i get a circular arc that does have some...

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

I am assuming it would be difficult to get a good sample but if I cut the 3d printed part really thin and look at the edge in question I’m guessing it would look like a really sketchy version of the graph of surface roughness?

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

Good point 😂. If I kept the light the same would shadow color/darkness work. I probably could purchase a standard to compare to. I do need this to be replicable, but the main goal is to get a statistically significant difference that one pattern is better than the others. Or not. My grade...

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

Would it be possible to use an optical microscope and some sort of image analysis? I believe the ones we have go up to 400x.

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

Just to each other should be sufficient. Thanks

Alternate ways to measure surface roughness?

I am trying to compare the surface roughness of 3D printed specimens for a school project, but I am realizing I don't have access to any of the standard equipment that would be used to measure it. Are there alternative measurements I would be able to use that would yield similar results, using...

How to Calculate how much a column buckles?

I’m am looking for how to calculate the new horizontal and vertical “size” of a column based on the material and how much force is applied from the top/ends. I have 3D printed TPU pillars that are made to compress and mold to a shape, but I am trying to figure out how much they will compress...

Maximizing Weight Capacity for Casters on Carpeted Surfaces

The surface is likely carpet and has no steps. The whole "table" is only 5'x2' so it's unlikely to be too unbalanced because of space constraints of where people can stand, but I see your point. People would likely sit and slide off, so I was hoping the weight of the wood would counteract most...

Maximizing Weight Capacity for Casters on Carpeted Surfaces

Ideally it would be moved with people standing on it, during the scene. We're not too concerned with how we'll push it since worse case someone gets off.

Maximizing Weight Capacity for Casters on Carpeted Surfaces

The load is about 3 people (it's the frame for a prop), if it fails we fall :-) I suppose I am assuming that 6x6s are sufficient to hold us up? There is also a plywood top I didn't bother CADing.

Maximizing Weight Capacity for Casters on Carpeted Surfaces

Currently I have 6 casters with a 90lb capacity, but I need this “table” (closest description to the shape) to hold over 500lbs. If I double up the wheels on the “legs” will that increase the weight capacity?
