Exploring Nitrogen Oxide Compounds: Unraveling the Mystery

I’m puzzled by these two oxides of nitrogen, especially with NO, how do they exist, what favors them? If nitrogen has 1s2 2s2 2 px1 py1 pz1 configuration how or why does he form compound with only one oxygen atom ? Nitrogen has +1 oxidation number here right? So by what kind of connection...

Electrophoresis: SingleStrain vs DoubleStrain DNA chain speed

Please excuse my bad language. OK, forming secondary structure… I was thinking on Single stranded DNA in denaturated gel or denaturated Single stranded DNA (urea), which can not form intrastrand bonds.

Electrophoresis: SingleStrain vs DoubleStrain DNA chain speed

Why does single strain DNA moves slower then double strain DNA in gel electrophoresis? I think that it is because single strain DNA has less electrical charge than double DNA helix, and single strained binds with H bonds uncharged molecules thus increasing it’s mass.

    Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and ions

Recently I had a discussion with friends about impact of H.U.P. on some biological functions. We had disagreement, about uncertainty of position of ion, say in neuron connected to another one by synapse, as a consequence of HUP, point was that if there is some uncertainty in position of ion or...

Sarah's Question: How Were We Created?

It could be true…in past month in my country we had, for some reason, few on national level discussions on this topic, on many popular and national TV stations. Professor teaching molecular genetics on my university, also was teaching in USA for a long period of time, had same experience, and he...

Exploring the Learning Process in Advanced Biology: A Question for Biologists

If you’re double thinking about physics or biology, don’t think twice, physics is right choice (if you prefer “hard” thinking). When you put it on scale dividing memorizing vs. thinking, believe me thinking part (esp. creative) arising from biology (classical or molecular…) is like box of...

    Physical limitations of computer speed

We can agree that there are limitations originating from physical principles (constanats) computer speed. On many sites I read common sentence was one referring to CPU frequency increment. It’s sad that as we increase CPU’s working frequency we have to locate memory (RAM) closer to CPU because...

Fluorescent Paints: Chemical Structure & Invisible Application

Huh  , thank you for answering but, let me rephrase. I just want to know, what are fluorescent chromophores in structural sense used in fluorescent paints. By that I mean what functional element is usually used when you’re synthesizing fluorescent dye to give it characteristic known...

Fluorescent Paints: Chemical Structure & Invisible Application

What is general chemical structure of fluorescent paints (one’s that are invisible except when radiated with UV light). I’m especially interested in this because I would like to maybe paint something on walls of my room invisibly, but seen under UV lamp (cool, a ?:)). But I...

    Protein folding thermodynamics

OK, I agree with your remarks. But those aren’t answers to my question. Of course not all denaturized proteins will be able to refold spontaneously, some will, and some will use chaperones, but some will do this without any help (you must know about Anfinsen’s classical experiments with...

    Thermodynamics of protein folding

Thank you Bystander, you’ve moved discussion from dead point. Let’s define parameters of change like this: Consider observed system: tube with water and protein in it. (+surrounding if needed) 1) It’s on 37 degrees of Celsius (body temperature). Protein is properly folded hydrophilic...

    Protein folding thermodynamics

My textbook’s explanation for spontaneous renaturation of defolded protein is this: “Although in defolded state protein has grater entropy, greater degree of disorder, it folds into original conformation (lower entropy), and this seems to be in collision with the II law of thermodynamics. But...
