    Almost Plausible Solar Takeover Plan

Odd that the last thing is only there when I hit reply, is that a hint? "Almost Plausible Solar Takeover Plan" is the name of the thread, and if "almost plausible" includes covering around 3% of the worlds third largest country in solar panels, then all good. The last thing I'll add...

    Almost Plausible Solar Takeover Plan

What other reason is there then for pursuing solar and wind if the ultimate goal is not related to the e word, or c word? (ahem a different c word...) FYI, I'm no c change denier, or anti e, I'd actually rather we keep both in good shape. If this is just an academic exercise to see if solar...

    Almost Plausible Solar Takeover Plan

So I wonder if they also worked out the land area we'd have to destroy for this environmentally friendly endeavor? Topaz (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topaz_Solar_Farm) is 550MW peak. It covers an area of about 19km^2. If we use that as a reference, 19km^2 for 550MWpk, then to produce 8TW...

Ha I should have put that one first since you put the Semikron link in! I'm playing in automotive/heavy transport traction, so 30-500kW systems with 4-800V DC links, so basically 600/650V devices and 1200V devices. In my past life I was part of what started as IR automotive, so we go access to...

    School me on SCR/Thyristor/GTO

Perfect, thanks for this link! Some good reading in there. I don't know why, but stuff like this makes me smile! :D

    School me on SCR/Thyristor/GTO

Hmm interesting, so how do they handle that, low impedance on the gate holding it off? I think I'm going to keep investigating thyrsitors, when you do the math on the number of 25mOhm SiC die you need at max heatsink temp for bi directional 250Arms switch its eye wateringly expensive!

Also note in my previous job we had bare die capability, so we would buy sawn wafer on foil and go from there. Now at a new place and unfortunately no more clean room, vacuum soldering and wire/ribbon bonders, so kinda looking for a place that can prototype DBC assemblies... :D

Hmmm not many companies, I can start guessing :D Littlefuse/IXYS,, RoHm? or we talking big stuff, like ABB big? This is obviously also not a personal project, but would be quite interested to hear how/what SiC capability, we've typically worked with IR/Infineon for low voltage (FET) stuff and...

    School me on SCR/Thyristor/GTO

The dv/dt capability I was concerned about is the (I assume) off state critical dv/dt, but after reading more carefully the gate is open in this condition, they can probably handle larger dv/dt if gate is shorted. I can't go into to too much detail but it would be seeing inverter output voltage...

    School me on SCR/Thyristor/GTO

Funny you should mention MCT, i did my final year project with those, not sure if things changed since then but they were normally "ON" devices, which lead to some spectacular failures. I did a bit more reading on the SCR/Thyristor devices, GTO seems to be more higher voltage. I just...

    School me on SCR/Thyristor/GTO

I have very limited knowledge on these things, I can talk mosfet/igbt/SiC all day... lol Basically I need to make a bidirectional switch, 600-1200V rating, 2-600A capacity. No PWM or anything, just on and off, once on (or off), stay that way for at least seconds until next command. I was...

    Bare Metal Programming for Beginners

I'm by no means an embedded expert, but I'd never heard of this "bare metal programming" before... I/we've done plenty of work on everything from ATINY24 to Infineon Tricore, most smaller stuff generally doesn't have an RTOS, we just write C functions, sometimes in assembly if needed (esp with...

Induction Water Heaters: Are They Worth It?

Heatpump HW heaters do have limitations, specifically the maximum hot side temperature is the problem, from memory its difficult for them to exceed 50-60C output temp without multi stage pumps, basically good for low grade heat at best. So they are perfect for areas that are warm already, but...
