Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

Update: Based on the voltage at the batteries while connected to the UPS, I know believe that the 1 amp charging circuit trickle charges the batteries at 2.3 volts/cell. I measure 27.6 volts at the batteries and this seems to be consistent. I also notice that the case of the UPS is warm in one...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

Thanks for the info and links Jim. I have some additional info. I turned everything off, disconnected the batteries and charged them separately with my smart charger. The charger indicated 95% charge for each of them. I also put the two 7 Ah batteries that were supplied with the UPS on the...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

Update: According to the interface software, the batteries are fully charged. The voltage at the batteries is 26.4 volts, which would be 13.2 volts each. I think that is consistent with fully charged batteries. So at this point I think I am set. I got worried right after the discharge...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

Thanks Jim, Yes, fuse holder is in open air. I'm using a 40 amp, as I'm thinking that the heat must indicate that the fuse is resisting the current flow too much, but maybe not. I also replaced the fuse holder, as I wanted to be sure that wasn't the issue. Wires to and from batteries and UPS are...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

OK, I wired the large external batteries to the new UPS and everything appears to be working fine. However, during a test in which I cut the power using the GFCI test button, the fuse and fuse holder got pretty hot. All the rest of the wiring stayed cool, but the fuse got pretty hot. Is that a...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

Update: Bought a CyberPower CP1350PFCLCD UPS. This UPS puts out a pure sine wave with 810 watt capacity. So far, I am impressed with the features and performance of this unit. Excellent value for $180 I think. Also, unlike some other brands, CyberPower will let you use their professional...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

Thanks for all the great tips and info. This forum is really great. I opened up my old UPS and didn't see anything obvious. Going to give it to a friend who sometimes is able to fix electronics, provided the problem is something easy and cheap to fix, like a failed diode or resister. In the...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

Correction. I meant to say both batteries are now fully charged. Used external charger. I will do autopsy on my UPS. If I don't find anything obvious, I will replace it. Will update what I find. Don

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

I had the UPS working fine for years with the two 33 Ah batteries, so I don't think the capacity of the batteries is causing my current issue. I think something has failed in the electronics and that is what is causing the UPS to slowly drain the batteries. My line power is good.

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

OK, both new batteries are not fully charged. Now to find a good used Smart-UPS to replace my failed unit. Anyone have any advice and/or suggestions? I would imagine that all the APC 1500 VA units have 24 volt battery input, but will have to confirm. Don

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

No error codes or chirps. The PowerChute software indicates that everything is A OK, but the charge % keeps going down.

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

"You already replaced your batteries but for the benefit of others, I would like to say that the cause of death was likely to be sulphation. Instead of buying new batteries, the old ones may have been rescued. A battery charger with and "equalize" (i.e. desulphate) cycle is the key. If you...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

I disconnected the batteries and am charging them one at a time with a Schumacher Battery Extender 3A charger/maintainer. It is one of those completely automatic microprocessor models. It says it has 8 modes, one of which is desulfation. The first battery, which is charging now was at only 45%...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

OK, I will add a fuse. It appears that the UPS is not charging the batteries and is in fact slowly draining them. I will have to replace the UPS. Thinking of ordering a used one online. Will save money and probably end up with more robust unit than another APC consumer grade unit. Thinking of...

Replacing UPS Batteries with Marine/RV Batteries

Hi Guys, I'm back. Was doing a search and came upon this article I posted 5 years ago. Update: Werker batteries died. Just replaced with 2 35 Ah Duracell Ultra AGM batteries. Regarding the suggestion for a safety fuse, wouldn't the built in UPS circuit breaker and the GFCI outlet I have it...
