What Have Educators Learned About Distance Learning?

The Australian National University will made an offer of admission you a year before you graduate high school. They will admit you on Grade 11 results while you are completing Grade 12. You need good Year 11 results though.

What Have Educators Learned About Distance Learning?

For some odd reason, the quality of students is never mentioned in these studies. The biggest predictor of student outcomes is socioeconomic status. I have taught and tutored in Australian private and public schools. Public schools are like a warzone & I'm surprised that kids learn anything. On...

What Have Educators Learned About Distance Learning?

That's along the lines of a flipped classroom.

Computer Can We Create an AM Wide Area Network for Virtual Learning During Quarantine?

I do have a ham radio licence. There are "band plans" on which frequencies you can transmit on. You don't want to interfere with aircraft or airport frequencies, or mining companies, etc. Most local amateur transmissions are about 146 MHz or 434 MHz. (because most amateur radio repeaters are...

A The Wolfram Model & Wolfram Physics Project

After listening to the videos, Wolfram makes claims that the photon may not be massless, and he can explain why anti-matter does not have anti-mass. It will be interesting to see whether his system can make predictions or explain phenomena.

A The Wolfram Model & Wolfram Physics Project

Is the Wolfram approach anything like Category Theory but applied to physics? My understanding is that Category Theory uses digraphs to create abstractions of underlying mathematical proceses whereas Wolfram is using hypergraphs to create abstractions of underlying physical processes.

A The Wolfram Model & Wolfram Physics Project

His book seemed to go nowhere. I remember reading that great minds often come up with grandiose improbable ideas in their old age. Let's see how this goes. (The only work of Wolfram I have read was when he was at school & he definitely is a prodigy).

Example of a technology that was long underestimated?

Amel brand yachts used to be 45° degrees in year 2000, now the latest ones are 30°. Source: watching too many SV Delos videos. My example is the Radon transform, an integral transform from 1917. Its a bit like those transforms you learned in you real analysis course, somewhat dry and boring...

School math/physics education in USA/Canada compared to Europe

As a maths teacher and private tutor, I suggest trying http://mathletics.com/ or https://ixl.com/math/ or perhaps kumonglobal.com . Make sure he knows his multiplication table and reading an analog clock, knows how many days in each month, can recite the months, and spell months and days...

School math/physics education in USA/Canada compared to Europe

I teach maths and science not far from this locality. Its true what you say - you can do university level courses in Australian schools, and in some exceptional circumstances kids in primary/elementary schools even undertake university level maths. I have had Year 11 students study a university...

    How do computers understand bits?

This video may help. It goes through some electronic circuits, shows how bits "0" "and "1" correspond to voltages, and shows those voltages on a test instrument called an oscilloscope. In the process he shows how to connect a temperature sensor to a small computer called an Arduino. In this...

Mind boggling machine learning results from AlphaZero

I don't think so. You are right in what the paper is about. There is no alpha-beta, no "clever heuristics", no evaluation function. Instead there is a deep neural network and Monte Carlo Tree Search. What they seem to have done is transform the problem from one domain to another. Evaluations...

Bash shell scripting and data science

If you are learning linux or unix, one of the first things you learn are shells and scripting languages. There are many shells - bash, sh, csh, z shell. Shells, pipelines and unix commands the glue that binds linux together.

YOU: Fix the US Energy Crisis

Renewable energy (wind, solar, etc) is now cheaper than coal and getting cheaper every day. The time for nuclear power, of any description, is over. Its not economically viable given the issues of waste disposal. Thorium reactors have been actively proposed for a decade, and they remain just...
