    Joint Major (with Nuclear Engineering)

Hi xholicwriter! Congratulations on your acceptance to Cal! I'm in a similar boat with you; I'm a current high school senior coming to Cal for Civil (&Enviro) Engineering. I won't be the first to answer your question since I wouldn't know enough/have enough experience to give you the right...

What should I do with my life? At a crossroads

I checked out your recent activity on the forum, and I understand you're considering a wide range of jobs. Just please make sure you do something you enjoy. When you asked I'd it's better to teach high school physics out math due to your degree, I'm sure what matters more is that you enjoy what...

What should I do with my life? At a crossroads

If you're considering med school only because of the course requirements, it probably isn't best to get into the profession without further foresight. As jedishrfu suggested, look into your skills and try to seek employment. Best of luck.

Is there a Whole Number Multiple of Pi Closest to a Whole Number?

Thank you for the reply, micromass! I was not familiar with Kronecker's density theorem, but its logic clarifies this problem. I wonder if there's any pattern in what integers n would bring us closer to a whole number... Ah, well there goes my bedtime tonight! Thanks for the direction :D

Is there a Whole Number Multiple of Pi Closest to a Whole Number?

Hi everyone, About 15 minutes ago I came up with a problem... What whole number multiple of pi would result in a number closest to a whole number? Does a single whole number multiple exist, and can we... prove it? Thanks for help in advance! -Daniel

Is Bill Nye the Science Guy's Wacky Persona Damaging Kids' Interest in Science?

As a current high schooler looking back upon my early years, I find a certain fondness toward the attempts of Bill Nye at presenting Science as *cool* for kids. But I think that at the time, it really depends what the education environment is like. In my public elementary school, we were...

Why Study Mathematics? Tracing Our Origins and Motivations

I get a feeling that I shouldn't be the first to ask this question. If a similar thread has already been created, a link to it would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Daniel

Why Study Mathematics? Tracing Our Origins and Motivations

Hi everyone, I'd like to take some time to reminisce and go back into our pasts. I understand many people believe anecdotes like these are pointless, but I still feel that they are important to understand how we may inspire the next generation of learners as well as keep us motivated in our...

Tips for Improving Reading Speed: A Junior's Struggle and Seeking Solutions

xD that's a syndrome? Thanks, if I happen to not comprehend a phrase, I'd repeat it and fit into context until I do (and that's probably what makes me not such a fast reader)

Tips for Improving Reading Speed: A Junior's Struggle and Seeking Solutions

Ohhh, noooo... I read at the pace of someone speaking quickly, of course. But many of my friends can read through passages almost twice as fast as I, and they attribute it to reading by looking at groups of words. Thanks for the advice, I'll try to make myself read more.

Tips for Improving Reading Speed: A Junior's Struggle and Seeking Solutions

Hmmm I like your approach with the questions (especially the last one). Thank you very much! Do you have any suggestions on what questions I should ask myself when reading articles like those on the SAT (if you're familiar with the style) or texts on History or the sort?

Tips for Improving Reading Speed: A Junior's Struggle and Seeking Solutions

This probably sounds silly, but I actually had the SAT Critical Reading section in mind when I wrote this post. I sometimes can't finish those sections on time... As for math/science texts, I'll take my time. I'll practice that approach to eliminate sub-vocalization. Thank you very much! I...

Tips for Improving Reading Speed: A Junior's Struggle and Seeking Solutions

Greetings! A little about me first: I'm an above-average Junior in high school in the US who loves Maths and Physics. Since I was a child, I was never told how to read (I never read much, really...) I taught myself to pronounce the words out loud in my head, and this habit is really bad...
