Thank you for your response, micromass. I totally understand that no one here can look into the minds of an admission committee; I was simply hoping that perhaps math faculty or graduate students here who have had interacted with admission committee members can at least offer me some insight...
To give a bit of my background, I am a junior double majoring in mathematics and philosophy aiming for a Ph.D. in pure mathematics. Recently, I wrote a paper for a philosophy class that was extremely well-received by my professor, so much that he encouraged me to submit it for possible...
I would love to go to one of those schools, but it's not like I can go to a top school just because I want to; I have to worry about getting in first! I'll probably end up applying to ~10-12 programs next year, and I want a good variety of schools: some near the top, and others for which I have...
I've been having trouble finding many pure math Ph.D. programs with active research groups in the general field of discrete mathematics (perhaps due to its interdisciplinary nature). I'm only aware of the top schools in this field (e.g. Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, UCSD, Rutgers); can anyone...
Hey guys, thanks for the responses so far. :) But to clarify:
1) I may not actually be able to continue the REU as my senior thesis. My school requires that a 6-page proposal describing the details of the senior thesis project be submitted and approved by the end of the previous semester (i.e...
I am a junior mathematics major at a relatively unknown liberal arts college planning to apply to Ph.D. programs in pure math next year. I have a near-perfect math GPA and a pretty solid background in terms of my coursework, including every intermediate and advanced-level pure math course...

Offers: W&M, ETSU, LSU, Lafayette, UT Tyler, JMU, Oregon State
Rejections: Emory, Williams (SMALL), SUNY Potsdam
I accepted the offer to ETSU, declined my other offers, and withdrew my applications to the places that I have not heard back from. Congratulations to all...
Thank you! I was contacted through e-mail at all places I listed. If you haven't heard back, then there's still hope since you haven't been rejected.
I don't think there's any reason to make alternative plans so soon; from what I've heard, some programs won't have completed their...

A week ago I was worried that I wouldn't get into any REUs, and now I'm dizzy from thinking about which one to attend!
I'm writing to let you all know that William and Mary has begun sending out offers. I have a week to decide. :)
By the way, has anyone here attended the W&M math REU? If so, I'd love to hear about your experience and overall thoughts.
Congratulations on the offer! If you're still waiting to hear back from programs higher on your preference list, you can send them an e-mail politely asking about your application status, indicating that you have already received an offer but are more interested in their program. But if you...
@l'Hôpital: Well, this time next year I will hopefully be awaiting grad school admission results, so... But I'm pretty confident that I'll get into at least one REU. I'm playing the pity card (if there is such a thing), i.e. I go to a small liberal arts school with limited research...
Congratulations, l'Hôpital! I expressed interest in the Number Theory & Probability, Knot Theory, and Phylogenetics groups and have not heard back from any of them, so I'm inclined to believe that SMALL is a no-go for me.
