Work Done on Trunk by Applied Force P: 8.83 J

In summary, a trunk with a mass of 2.3 kg is pushed 187 cm up an incline with an angle of inclination of 18.0° by a constant horizontal force of 225 N. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the trunk and the incline is 0.22. The work done on the trunk by the applied force is 420.75 J and the work done by the frictional force is -8.83 J. However, a simple mistake was made by not considering the component of the applied force that is perpendicular to the ramp when calculating the frictional force.

Homework Statement

A trunk of mass m = 2.3 kg is pushed a distance d = 187 cm up an incline with an angle of inclination q = 18.0° by a constant horizontal force P = 225 N (see figure). The coefficient of kinetic friction between the trunk and the incline is 0.22. Calculate the work done on the trunk by the applied force P.

Calculate the work done on the trunk by the frictional force.

Homework Equations

work=F*D
Fk=Fn*Uf

The Attempt at a Solution

I solved for the work of the push, for the work of friction I am doing this

.22*2.3*9.81*cos(18)=4.72N
4.72N*1.87m=8.83 J, and because the work is on the negative direction of the movement its -8.83.

Keeps saying my answer is wrong.

A simple mistake. You're doing it all correctly, and you're going to hate this. You simply forgot to consider the component of P that is perpendicular to the ramp when calculating the frictional force. =/

Related to Work Done on Trunk by Applied Force P: 8.83 J

1. What is work?

Work is the transfer of energy that occurs when a force is applied to an object and the object moves in the direction of the force.

2. How is work calculated?

Work is calculated by multiplying the applied force by the distance the object moves in the direction of the force. The unit of work is joules (J).

3. What is the unit of work?

The unit of work is joules (J). It is a derived unit that combines the units of force (newtons) and distance (meters).

4. What does the given value of "8.83 J" represent?

The value of "8.83 J" represents the amount of energy transferred or work done on an object by an applied force of P in the amount of 8.83 joules.

5. How is work related to the applied force and distance?

Work is directly proportional to both the applied force and the distance an object moves in the direction of the force. This means that an increase in either the force or the distance will result in an increase in the amount of work done, while a decrease in either will result in a decrease in work.
