What is the object distance for a concave mirror?

In summary, the distance to a concave mirror is the distance from the object to the mirror's center of curvature. It can be measured using a ruler or measuring tape, and is important because it determines the type, size, and location of the image formed by the mirror. The distance is inversely proportional to the size of the image, meaning that as the distance increases, the image size decreases and vice versa. The distance also determines the location of the image, with the object's placement relative to the center of curvature and the focal point affecting the image's inversion, size, and location.

Hey eveyone,

I have a concave mirror and an object x distance away from the mirror. I am wondering if anyone knows where you measure from in order to determine how far away the object is from the mirror. Is it from the object to the center of the concave mirror?

Thanks,
ccflyer

Yes, the "object distance" is the distance along the mirror axis from the object to the vertex of the mirror (the center of the concave surface).

Hello ccflyer,

To determine the distance between an object and a concave mirror, you would measure from the object to the center of the mirror. This is known as the object distance, and it is an important factor in understanding how the light rays will reflect off the mirror. The distance from the object to the mirror's center is also known as the focal length, which is a key measurement in determining the image produced by the mirror. I hope this helps!

What is the distance to a concave mirror?

The distance to a concave mirror is the distance from the object to the mirror's center of curvature.

How is the distance to a concave mirror measured?

The distance to a concave mirror can be measured using a ruler or measuring tape, by finding the distance between the mirror and the object.

Why is the distance to a concave mirror important?

The distance to a concave mirror is important because it determines the type of image formed by the mirror. It also affects the size and location of the image.

What is the relationship between the distance to a concave mirror and the size of the image?

The distance to a concave mirror is inversely proportional to the size of the image. This means that as the distance increases, the image size decreases and vice versa.

How does the distance to a concave mirror affect the location of the image?

The distance to a concave mirror determines the location of the image. If the object is placed beyond the center of curvature, the image will be inverted and located between the center of curvature and the focal point. If the object is placed between the center of curvature and the focal point, the image will be enlarged and located beyond the center of curvature.
