What exactly do we mean by nothingness? Im asking about when this

In summary, "nothingness" in scientific terms refers to the absence of any material or energy. It is not the same as a vacuum, as a vacuum still contains energy and potential for matter to exist. Nothingness cannot be observed or measured directly and is often used in contrast to something. In the Big Bang theory, the singularity can be seen as a state of nothingness, as it was the absence of everything in the universe. However, the existence of true nothingness is a philosophical question with no definitive answer in science.

Since there are no observations before the BB and our math does not tell us anything about before the BB and discussion of this question must by its very nature be pure speculation.

We do not allow speculative discussions on these forums.

Related to What exactly do we mean by nothingness? Im asking about when this

1. What is meant by "nothingness" in scientific terms?

In science, "nothingness" refers to the absence of any material or energy. It is a state of complete emptiness and lack of existence.

2. Is nothingness the same as a vacuum?

No, a vacuum is the absence of matter in a defined space, while nothingness is the absence of anything at all. In a vacuum, there is still energy and potential for matter to exist, whereas in nothingness, there is nothing.

3. Can nothingness be observed or measured?

No, nothingness cannot be observed or measured directly. It is a concept that exists in contrast to something, and therefore cannot be quantified on its own.

4. How does nothingness relate to the Big Bang theory?

The Big Bang theory suggests that the universe began as a singularity, a state of infinite density and temperature. This singularity can be thought of as a state of nothingness, as it was the absence of everything we know to exist in the universe.

5. Is there really such a thing as "nothingness"?

This is a philosophical question that has no definitive answer. In science, nothingness is a concept used to describe the absence of anything tangible, but it is up to interpretation whether or not true nothingness can exist.
