Weight Change of Coke Can When Opened: Explained

In summary, when a can of coke is opened on a sensitive balance, the reading initially increases and then decreases. This is because the force on the liquid inside the can is transferred to the can itself, causing an increase in net force and therefore an increase in the reading. As the liquid continues to pour out, the mass of the can decreases and the reading decreases as well. This is due to the escaping CO2 gas and possible evaporation of water. It is important to consider these factors when measuring the weight of an opened can of coke on a sensitive balance.

when a can of coke placed in a sensitive balance is opened what happens to the reading?
the answer of this question is given first increases and decreases.
can anyone explain this?

can coke opens and liquid bursts out of it with some acceleration which means: can applies force on liquid which means: liquid applies force on can::

so net force on can increase so does reading

now when the liquid is completely out the mass of can is reduced and so does reading

In a less dramatic scenario, the CO2 gas is escaping from the hole in the top and this pressure is causing an increase in downward force. Once the fizzing has stopped and there is less CO2 in there, the final weight will be less (and there may be some water evaporation too.
Should I be doing all this thinking for you? Is this a h/w question?

Related to Weight Change of Coke Can When Opened: Explained

What causes a Coke can to change weight when opened?

When a Coke can is unopened, it contains both liquid and gas. However, when it is opened, the gas escapes in the form of bubbles, causing a decrease in weight.

Does the weight change occur immediately after opening the can?

Yes, the weight change occurs almost immediately after opening the can as the gas is released and the weight of the can decreases.

Why does the weight of the can decrease instead of increase due to the added bubbles?

The weight of the added bubbles is negligible compared to the weight of the liquid in the can. Therefore, the overall weight of the can decreases when the gas is released.

Is the weight change of a Coke can consistent every time it is opened?

No, the weight change can vary slightly depending on factors such as temperature, altitude, and the amount of gas in the can at the time of opening.

Does the weight change of a Coke can have any impact on its taste or quality?

No, the weight change does not affect the taste or quality of the Coke. It is merely a result of the release of gas and has no impact on the drink itself.
