In summary, the main differences between the Sakurai 1st and 2nd editions are the inclusion of updated content, improved illustrations and diagrams, new exercises and problems, reorganization of topics, and a new chapter on quantum information in the 2nd edition. Both editions are suitable for beginners, but the 1st edition is often recommended for its comprehensive coverage of fundamental concepts. Those who have studied the 1st edition can still benefit from the 2nd edition, which also provides a solid foundation and includes new information and a chapter on quantum information. While the 2nd edition covers some advanced topics, it is not significantly more advanced than the 1st edition. Both editions are commonly used in academic settings, with the

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to check out Sakurai/Napolitano's 2nd edition of Modern Quantum mechanics. Better or worse than the revised first?

Thanks!

Related to Sakurai 1st edition vs. Sakurai 2nd edition?

1. What are the main differences between the Sakurai 1st and 2nd editions?

The main differences between the Sakurai 1st and 2nd editions are:

  • The 2nd edition includes updated content and discussions on new developments in the field since the 1st edition was published.
  • The 2nd edition has improved illustrations and diagrams, making it easier to understand complex concepts.
  • The 2nd edition includes new exercises and problems for readers to practice and apply their understanding.
  • The 2nd edition has been reorganized and streamlined for a more logical flow of topics.
  • The 2nd edition has a new chapter on quantum information, a rapidly growing area of research.

2. Which edition is more suitable for beginners in the field of quantum mechanics?

The 1st edition is often recommended for beginners as it covers the fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics in a more detailed and comprehensive manner. However, the 2nd edition also provides a solid foundation for beginners and includes updated content and exercises for a more modern approach to the subject. Ultimately, it depends on the reader's preference and learning style.

3. Can someone who has studied the 1st edition still benefit from the 2nd edition?

Yes, someone who has studied the 1st edition can still benefit from the 2nd edition. The 2nd edition includes new information and discussions on recent developments in the field, making it a valuable resource for staying up-to-date on quantum mechanics. Additionally, the 2nd edition has a new chapter on quantum information, which is not covered in the 1st edition.

4. Is the 2nd edition significantly more advanced than the 1st edition?

While the 2nd edition does cover some advanced topics and includes new material, it is not significantly more advanced than the 1st edition. The main difference between the two editions is the updated content and organization, rather than the level of difficulty. Both editions provide a solid understanding of quantum mechanics for students at the undergraduate or graduate level.

5. Which edition is more commonly used in academic settings?

Both the 1st and 2nd editions are widely used in academic settings, but the 2nd edition is more commonly used as it is the newer version. However, some professors may still use the 1st edition as a resource or reference for certain topics. If you are unsure which edition to use for a specific course, it is best to consult with your professor.
