Probability Question - Chances Of Meeting Again

In summary, the question is asking about the probability of a person meeting another person after 11 years of not seeing each other, assuming all people encountered in their lifetime have an equal chance. The attempt at a solution involves using the combination formula, but it is unclear if it is the correct approach.

Homework Statement

Question is pretty straight forward. What is the probability of a person meeting another person 11 years after they have last seen each other. There are of course factors such as relationship, age, location and all that but we are assuming all of the people this person has encountered in their lifetime would have an equal chance.

Homework Equations

We also assume this given person interacts with about 3 people everyday and lives to be 62.

62years X 365days X 3 people= 67.890 people on average

a person will encounter in their lifetime. The Attempt at a Solution I tried to solve this using the combination formula (nCr) but I'm not sure if that is the right way to go about this. If it is, then would it be (67.890 C 2)/2?

Related to Probability Question - Chances Of Meeting Again

What is the probability of meeting someone again?

The probability of meeting someone again depends on various factors such as the size of the population, frequency of interaction, and individual circumstances. It is impossible to accurately determine the exact probability of meeting someone again.

Can probability be used to predict if two people will meet again?

No, probability cannot be used to predict if two people will meet again. Probability deals with random events and cannot account for the individual choices and actions of people.

What is the difference between probability and possibility?

Probability refers to the likelihood of an event occurring, while possibility refers to the potential for an event to occur. Probability takes into account the total number of outcomes, while possibility does not.

How does the frequency of interaction affect the chances of meeting someone again?

The more frequently two people interact, the higher the chances of meeting again. This is because the more interactions there are, the more opportunities there are for them to meet again.

Can the chances of meeting again be influenced by individual circumstances?

Yes, the chances of meeting again can be influenced by individual circumstances such as moving to a different location, changing jobs, or having conflicting schedules. These factors can decrease the chances of meeting again.
