In summary, a strong earthquake measuring 8.2 by USGS and 8.5 by the Japanese equivalent has occurred just north of the site of the 2004 quake in Indonesia. A tsunami warning has been issued, but it is unclear if a tsunami actually occurred. There have been speculations about increased seismic activity in the region since the 2004 quake. Concerns have also been raised about the nearby Toba volcano and its potential effects from the recent earthquake.

http://wwwneic.cr.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_weax_l.html shows it SE of the Xmas event. There was something in Sci. Am. about expectations of more activity in that direction since it hadn't relaxed during the big quake. Getting closer to Toba as well --- anyone heard anything about any effort to monitor that beast as far as looking for effects of the recent activity?
