In summary, a team of polar explorers plans to drill beneath the ice in Antarctica to retrieve a cache of 100-year-old Scotch whiskey. However, the distiller wants to take samples to replicate the formula and possibly put it back on the market. The lost formula seems to be a surprise in the slow-changing world of scotch-distilling. Some speculate that this could be a marketing ploy, but it has garnered attention and could make for good PR.

Strange they cannot take back what was their own property and they seem fine with it.

It's kind of a world heritage site, now. The distiller wants samples of the scotch so that they can try to replicate the formula and maybe put it back on the market. Seems like a reasonable request... Things seem to change slowly in the world of scotch-distilling, so I'm surprised that they lost that formula/process/blend, etc in just 100 years.

Perhaps it's some sort of marketing ploy.

"Buy the long lost Antarctic scotch!"

Is this cache the only source of ethanol on Antarctic continent?

Wonder if the modern research stations smuggled some crates too.

Pretty good PR, I guess.
