To me these results are in no way surprising; although I do wonder if you would see a difference if you compared theory vs experimental PhDs; I''ve come across some students that were clearly very clever and hard working but completely useless in a lab, perhaps they would have done better doing theory.
I also think this pretty much agrees with the advice we tend to give to students worried about what their grades and other results might mean for how well they will do as grad students.
