Interesting article re. predicting grad school success

In summary, a study found that GRE scores do not predict success in graduate school. This is not surprising, as there may be other factors at play, such as the type of graduate program or a student's strengths and weaknesses. The study did find that the Subject GRE was a significant predictor of success, with a p-value of 0.015. This suggests that for certain programs, subject-specific knowledge may be more important than general aptitude.

To me these results are in no way surprising; although I do wonder if you would see a difference if you compared theory vs experimental PhDs; I''ve come across some students that were clearly very clever and hard working but completely useless in a lab, perhaps they would have done better doing theory.

I also think this pretty much agrees with the advice we tend to give to students worried about what their grades and other results might mean for how well they will do as grad students.

It's also worth pointing out the this is a statement about the General GRE. The Subject GRE was significant: p = 0.015.
