Homemade diesel-electric platform truck

In summary, The speaker has converted a battery-powered platform truck into a diesel-electric vehicle, using a 30hp diesel engine and a 6 Kw DC and AC generator. They plan to add a dump bed to the vehicle, but recognize that it may not be ideal for heavy work due to the high fuel consumption of the setup. They also mention potential issues with the engine or electrical components and note that the diesel-electric transmission is typically more economical than a mechanical one, but may have made a mistake in their choice of generator and motor.

Hi, this is my diesel-electric conversion for what was a battery only powered platform truck. Its got a 30hp diesel engine, a 6 Kw DC generator, and another 6 Kw AC generator. One thing to point out is that I'm running it only with the generators, no batteries.
Here's some pics of it:

Just for fun? Or are you going to put it to work?

I want to build a dump bed for it, but it's not so ideal to make it a work vehicle. This diesel-electric setup burns a lot of fuel compared to a mechanical transmission. I don't know if that's normal, or it might be something wrong with the engine or with the electrical side...

Take a look at the brushes on the electrical end of things.

Interestingly, it says that diesel-electric transmission is more economical than the mechanical one. I may got the diesel-generator-motor combination wrong. Not taking to consideration the fact that the AC generator is making peak power @1500 rpm, while the diesel makes peak torque at a little over 1500 revs. Also, there's a huge difference between the diesel output and the electric motor output, (the e-motor has 7 hp while the diesel has 30).

Related to Homemade diesel-electric platform truck

Q: What is a homemade diesel-electric platform truck?

A: A homemade diesel-electric platform truck is a type of vehicle that is powered by a combination of a diesel engine and an electric motor. It is typically built by individuals or small companies for personal or industrial use.

Q: How does a homemade diesel-electric platform truck work?

A: The diesel engine provides the primary power source for the truck, while the electric motor assists with acceleration and provides additional power when needed. The electric motor also acts as a generator, converting energy from braking and deceleration back into electricity to recharge the truck's batteries.

Q: What are the benefits of using a homemade diesel-electric platform truck?

A: There are several benefits to using a homemade diesel-electric platform truck. These include improved fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and increased power and torque compared to traditional diesel trucks. They also have lower maintenance costs and can be operated quietly, making them ideal for use in residential areas.

Q: What materials are needed to build a homemade diesel-electric platform truck?

A: The specific materials needed may vary depending on the design and size of the truck, but generally, you will need a diesel engine, an electric motor, batteries, a transmission, a frame, and various other mechanical and electrical components. Additionally, tools such as a welder, drill, and socket set will be necessary for assembly.

Q: Are there any regulations or restrictions for operating a homemade diesel-electric platform truck?

A: It is important to check with your local government and transportation authorities for any regulations or restrictions on operating a homemade diesel-electric platform truck. These may include licensing requirements, safety standards, and restrictions on where the truck can be used.
