Flying against the wind, an airplane travels
3420km
in
6
hours. Flying with the wind, the same plane travels
2670km
in
3
hours. What is the rate of the plane in still air and what is the rate of the wind?

Hello and welcome to MHB! :)

In order to really be able to help you we need to see what you have tried so we know where you are stuck or what you may be doing wrong. Having said that, I would begin by defining variables to represent the two unknown quantities we are asked to find. We could let $p$ be the speed of the plane in still air, and $w$ be the speed of the wind. These speeds will be in kilometers per hour. Using the relationship between distance $d$, constant speed $v$ and time $t$:

\(\displaystyle d=vt\)

we may then state using the given information:

\(\displaystyle 3420=(p-w)6\)

\(\displaystyle 2670=(p+w)3\)

If we divide the first equation by 6 and the second by 3, we obtain the simpler system:

\(\displaystyle 570=p-w\)

\(\displaystyle 890=p+w\)

Now, you can add these two equations together to eliminate $w$ and solve for $p$, and then use this value of $p$ and either of these two equations to find $w$. What do you get?

Re: word problem please help

Adding the two equations, we obtain:

\(\displaystyle 1460=2p\implies p=730\)

Now, using the first of the two equations we added and the value of $p$, we have:

\(\displaystyle 570=730-w\implies w=10(73-57)=160\)

And so we have found the speed of the plane in still air is 730 kph, and the speed of the wind is 160 kph.

Related to Finding the speed of the wind and an airplane in still air

1. How is the speed of the wind and an airplane in still air calculated?

The speed of the wind and an airplane in still air can be calculated using the airspeed indicator and the ground speed. The airspeed indicator measures the speed of the airplane relative to the air, while the ground speed is the speed of the airplane relative to the ground. By comparing these two speeds, the speed of the wind can be determined.

2. What factors can affect the accuracy of the calculated speed of the wind and an airplane in still air?

There are several factors that can affect the accuracy of the calculated speed, including changes in wind direction or speed during the flight, changes in altitude, and instrument errors. It is important to take into account these factors and make adjustments to the calculations accordingly.

3. Can the speed of the wind and an airplane in still air be determined without using instruments?

No, determining the speed of the wind and an airplane in still air requires the use of instruments. However, pilots can estimate the wind speed and direction based on visual cues such as the movement of clouds or the direction of smoke from chimneys.

4. Why is it important to know the speed of the wind and an airplane in still air?

Knowing the speed of the wind and an airplane in still air is important for flight planning and safety. It can help pilots determine the most efficient route and the amount of fuel needed for the flight. It can also help them anticipate and adjust for any potential turbulence or wind shear during the flight.

5. Can the speed of the wind and an airplane in still air change during a flight?

Yes, the speed of the wind and an airplane in still air can change during a flight. This can be due to changes in weather patterns or altitude, or changes in the airplane's direction or speed. Pilots must continuously monitor and adjust for these changes to ensure a safe and efficient flight.
